Chapter 23 - Evelyn Cross

Evelyn lived in a small house outside Fredericksburg.
She was eighty-four and had spent most of her career as a bank-compliance officer. Richard met her while investigating suspicious property transfers.
Evelyn had secretly preserved records that Conrad ordered destroyed.
When threats began, Richard created a protected identity for her. Evelyn Cross was not her birth name.
The emergency trust instruction gave her no ownership. It allowed her to freeze transactions if Bluebonnet ever obtained authority through forged incapacity documents.
“Richard created a trap,” Clara said.
Evelyn nodded.
“If they activated the false trust, I would be notified. I could stop the transfers and identify the accounts receiving them.”
“Then why did nothing happen during my birthday?” Elena asked.
“Because Sabrina’s transfer failed before the trust changed.”
Celeste now wanted the clause activated.
Not to control Elena’s assets, but to force Evelyn to reveal herself and access the records she had protected for twenty years.
“That is why they targeted the trust,” Elena said.
“And why Nora was used,” Evelyn replied. “Alder Crest needed a successful property case to test the system after the birthday plan failed.”
Evelyn opened a cabinet and removed a sealed parcel.
Richard had delivered it shortly before his death.
The instructions required Elena and Garrick to open it together if Bluebonnet returned.
“I nearly destroyed it after hearing what Garrick did,” Evelyn admitted.
“Why didn’t you?” Elena asked.
“Because Richard did not ask me to judge whether his son deserved the truth.”
Garrick stood by the window.
“I may not.”
“That is for you to decide after you hear it,” Evelyn said.
Elena agreed to open the parcel at the mansion under controlled conditions. Clara, Martin and investigators would be present.
Before they left, Evelyn handed Elena an old photograph.
It showed Richard, Mara, Victor and a much younger Celeste standing outside the first catering office.
A teenage girl stood beside Richard.
Her face had been partly damaged by water.
On the back, Richard had written:
She is the reason Conrad must never control the ledger.
Below that sentence appeared another line.
Garrick must never learn who she became until he is ready to choose without me.
Garrick read the message twice.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn looked toward Elena.
“I was hoping Richard had told you.”
May you like
“He did not.”
“Then the parcel is about more than Bluebonnet.”
