Chapter 9 - What Vanessa Whispered)

The answer came from Ethan.

But only after he finally stopped lying to himself.

He found Margaret in the breakfast room at seven thirty the next morning.

She was drinking tea.

He looked terrible.

Unshaven.

Wrinkled shirt.

Red eyes.

Margaret did not invite him to sit.

He sat anyway.

"I remember something."

She placed her cup down.

"What?"

"Before I pushed you."

Margaret waited.

"Vanessa said something."

"When?"

"That morning."

"What?"

Ethan rubbed his face.

"I was angry about the documents. You kept refusing. The lender deadline was that afternoon."

"What lender?"

"Northstar Capital."

Margaret had never heard of it.

"They were financing the rehabilitation project?"

"Yes."

"With one hundred and twenty million dollars?"

"Eventually."

Margaret stared at him.

Ethan looked ashamed.

"I thought if I got the trust restructuring approved, Northstar would fund phase one immediately."

"You were pledging family assets."

"I thought I could double them."

Margaret almost laughed.

Charles's warning had been exact.

Consequences were things other people suffered.

Ethan continued.

"Vanessa kept saying you wanted me to fail."

Margaret said nothing.

"She said you were refusing because you never trusted me."

"Did you believe her?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at her.

"Because part of me already believed it."

There was more honesty in that sentence than Margaret had heard from Ethan in years.

"What did Vanessa say that morning?"

He swallowed.

"She said if you didn't sign, you would eventually give control to Daniel."

Margaret frowned.

"I never planned that."

"I know."

"Now."

"Yes."

He looked down.

"She said you were going to sell the estate and move into assisted living."

Margaret stared at him.

"You believed that too?"

"I wasn't thinking."

"No. You were thinking. You simply preferred the thoughts that justified what you wanted."

Ethan winced.

Margaret did not soften it.

"What else?"

"She told me to make you understand there were consequences."

Margaret's hands tightened beneath the table.

"Those words?"

"Yes."

"Anything else?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Right before we went into the living room, she said, 'Don't let her walk away again.'"

Margaret remembered Vanessa opening the glass door.

"Did she tell you to hurt me?"

"No."

"Did she tell you to push me?"

"No."

"Did you push me because she ordered you to?"

"No."

Margaret held his gaze.

"Thank you."

He looked startled.

"For what?"

"For not blaming her for your hands."

Tears entered Ethan's eyes.

He quickly looked away.

"I didn't want to kill you."

"But you could have."

"I know."

"No, Ethan. I need you to understand the sentence. Look at me."

He did.

"You could have killed me."

His lower lip trembled.

"I know."

Margaret waited.

This time she believed him.

Not because he was absolved.

Because he had finally stopped defending himself.

He whispered, "I'm sorry."

Margaret closed her eyes.

There were a thousand versions of herself that wanted to cross the table and hold him.

The mother who kissed his scraped knees.

The mother who stayed awake during his first fever.

The mother who cried secretly when he left for college.

But she remained where she was.

"I believe you're sorry."

Hope appeared in his face.

Then she continued.

"That doesn't erase what you did."

The hope disappeared.

He nodded.

"I know."

Rebecca entered the room.

"Mrs. Hale. Mr. Hale."

Ethan stood.

Rebecca looked at him.

"We need you to come with us."

His face went pale.

"Am I under arrest?"

"Yes."

Margaret did not move.

Ethan looked at her.

Some desperate instinct appeared in his eyes.

The old instinct.

Mom will fix this.

Mom will make the consequences disappear.

Margaret felt her heart break.

She said nothing.

Rebecca placed him under arrest for assault.

Ethan did not resist.

As he was led away, he looked back once.

Margaret remained seated at the breakfast table.

Only after the front door closed did she allow herself to cry.

Daniel found her there twenty minutes later.

He did not tell her she had done the right thing.

He simply sat across from her.

After a while, he placed another document on the table.

"What now?" Margaret asked.

"We found Hale Succession Capital."

She wiped her eyes.

"Vanessa?"

"Not directly."

"Lucas?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Daniel turned the paper.

The owner was Northstar Capital Partners.

The same lender Ethan had planned to borrow from.

Margaret looked up.

Daniel's expression was grim.

"Northstar wasn't only financing Ethan's project."

"What were they doing?"

"They had an agreement with Vanessa."

He pushed another page toward her.

If Ethan defaulted after restructuring the trust, Northstar would gain enforcement rights against several Hale assets.

Vanessa would receive a commission.

Margaret felt her grief transform into something colder.

"She planned for Ethan to fail."

Daniel nodded.

"And when he did, Northstar would take the assets."

"Which Vanessa would help them acquire cheaply."

"Yes."

Margaret stood.

"Call the board."

"For when?"

"Today."

Daniel looked at her bandaged temple.

"Margaret."

"Today."

"You're injured."

"I'm also the trust protector."

"What are you planning?"

Margaret looked through the window at Charles's portrait in the hallway.

"For forty years, men in that boardroom assumed Charles Hale was the dangerous one."

May you like

Daniel almost smiled.

"They're about to learn something."
