Chapter 7 - The Folder Behind the Wall)
Rebecca ordered everyone to remain downstairs.
Ethan ignored her.
He ran toward the staircase.
"Ethan."
Rebecca's voice stopped him.
"Do not go upstairs."
"That's my wife."
"Which means emotions are involved. Stay here."
He looked like he might argue.
Margaret spoke first.
"For once in your life, listen."
Ethan stared at her.
Then stepped back.
Two officers entered through the front door.
Rebecca went upstairs with them.
The house became painfully quiet.
Margaret could hear the grandfather clock ticking.
Ethan paced.
Daniel reviewed messages on his phone.
Three minutes passed.
Then five.
At the seventh minute, a crash sounded above them.
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
"What was that?"
Another crash.
Then Rebecca shouted.
"Stop."
Running footsteps crossed the second floor.
A door slammed.
An officer yelled from outside.
"She's on the balcony."
Ethan ran toward the patio doors.
Margaret followed.
They stepped outside.
On the upper terrace, Vanessa appeared.
She carried a brown leather folder.
She climbed over the decorative railing onto a narrow section of roof above the conservatory.
"Vanessa."
Ethan's voice cracked.
She looked down.
For the first time Margaret saw no sarcasm in her face.
Only calculation.
Rebecca emerged onto the balcony.
"Mrs. Hale, come back over the railing."
Vanessa hugged the folder against her chest.
"I came for personal documents."
Rebecca said, "Then we can sort that out downstairs."
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
"You told them."
"Told them what?"
"Ashby Ridge."
"I didn't know about Ashby Ridge."
Vanessa's expression changed.
She had not expected that.
Ethan stepped closer to the building.
"You stole from me."
Vanessa laughed.
"From you?"
She looked at Margaret.
"He still doesn't understand."
"Understand what?" Ethan shouted.
Vanessa smiled down at him.
"You never had anything to steal."
The words landed visibly.
Margaret saw her son's face tighten.
Vanessa continued.
"You walked around this place pretending you were Charles Hale. You weren't even the landlord."
"Come down."
"Why?"
"Because we can fix this."
Margaret looked at Ethan.
Even now.
Even after learning his wife had deceived him, some part of him believed another conversation could erase reality.
Vanessa knew it too.
"No, Ethan. You can fix your mess."
She raised the folder.
"I have mine."
Rebecca moved one careful step closer.
"Vanessa, the roof is wet."
"Stay back."
She edged sideways.
A slate tile shifted beneath her heel.
Vanessa slipped.
Ethan shouted.
She fell onto one knee.
The folder flew from her hands.
It struck the edge of the roof and opened.
Dozens of papers burst into the wind.
Sheets fluttered down across the patio.
One landed at Margaret's feet.
Daniel picked it up.
His eyes widened.
"What is it?" Margaret asked.
He handed it to her.
It was a contract between Ashby Ridge Advisory and Lucas Brand.
The agreement promised Lucas twelve percent of the net proceeds from the acquisition and resale of Hale Residential Holdings.
Ethan stared at it.
"Acquisition?"
Daniel said nothing.
Margaret gave Ethan the document.
He read.
His knees almost seemed to weaken.
Vanessa climbed back over the railing and surrendered to Rebecca.
As officers escorted her downstairs, she passed Ethan in the foyer.
He held the contract.
"You were going to sell the estate?"
Vanessa shrugged.
"It was inefficient capital."
"This is my home."
Vanessa looked almost amused.
"It's Margaret's home."
Ethan flinched.
Margaret expected Vanessa to stop talking.
She didn't.
"You were useful because you believed everything should belong to you. Men like you are very easy to move, Ethan. All I had to do was tell you someone was taking what you deserved."
Ethan's face became pale.
"My father?"
"Your mother."
Vanessa smiled.
"You did the rest yourself."
Rebecca led her toward the door.
Then Vanessa turned her head toward Margaret.
"You think you've won?"
Margaret said nothing.
Vanessa nodded at the papers scattered across the patio.
"Look for the blue page."
Daniel immediately looked down.
Officers began collecting documents.
Margaret searched too.
Near the broken-door frame, a blue sheet was trapped beneath a planter.
She lifted it.
At the top were three words.
IRREVOCABLE SUCCESSION AMENDMENT.
Margaret read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
Her blood ran cold.
The document had supposedly been signed eighteen months earlier.
By Margaret Hale.
It appointed Ethan sole successor trust protector if Margaret died or became mentally incapacitated.
The signature was fake.
But the notary stamp looked legitimate.
Daniel read over her shoulder.
"My God."
Ethan approached.
"What?"
Margaret looked at him.
"If I had died when you pushed me through that glass, this document would have given you control of everything."
Ethan stared at Vanessa.
Vanessa's smile finally vanished.
Margaret understood.
The disabled security cameras.
The open glass door.
The forged succession amendment.
The pressure to sign away control.
May you like
This had never been only about frightening her.
Somebody had been preparing for the possibility that Margaret would not survive.
