Chapter 8 - The Camera Vanessa Forgot)
Vanessa was taken to the state police barracks for questioning.
Lucas Brand stopped answering his phone.
By midnight, federal financial investigators had been contacted because the suspected transfers crossed state and international banking systems.
Margaret remained in the estate library with Daniel and Rebecca.
Ethan sat alone near the fireplace.
Nobody asked him to leave.
Not yet.
The blue succession amendment lay sealed inside an evidence sleeve.
Rebecca looked at Margaret.
"Would Ethan gain control immediately if you died?"
"Not under the real trust documents," Daniel answered.
"Then the forged amendment was designed to change that."
"Yes."
Rebecca turned toward Ethan.
"Did you know about it?"
"No."
"Did you ever discuss becoming successor protector?"
"My father said I might eventually become trustee."
"That's different."
"I know that now."
Rebecca wrote something down.
"Did Vanessa know the difference?"
Ethan hesitated.
"Probably."
Margaret looked at him.
"Probably?"
"She knew more about the trust than I did."
Daniel's expression became disgusted.
"You were managing trust-owned companies."
"I managed operations, not legal structure."
"You signed millions in transactions."
Ethan stood.
"I already said I made mistakes."
Margaret replied quietly.
"You're still calling choices mistakes."
He looked at her.
"What's the difference?"
"A mistake is taking the wrong highway exit. You pressured me for weeks. You moved me out of my bedroom. You removed staff who disagreed with Vanessa. You threatened me. Then you shoved me."
Ethan looked toward the floor.
"Those were choices."
He did not answer.
Rebecca's phone rang.
She listened for thirty seconds.
Then looked at Daniel.
"They found Lucas."
"Where?"
"JFK Airport."
Margaret straightened.
"He was leaving?"
"One-way ticket to Lisbon."
Daniel shook his head.
"Subtle."
"He was carrying two laptops and forty-two thousand dollars in cash."
Ethan sat down again.
Rebecca continued.
"There's another thing. Your security contractor recovered some archived footage."
Margaret frowned.
"I thought Vanessa disabled the cameras."
"She disabled the main estate system."
Rebecca turned a laptop around.
"But apparently the landscape contractor installed a separate wildlife camera near the south garden because deer kept damaging the hydrangeas."
For the first time in three days, Margaret smiled.
"Charles hated those deer."
Rebecca opened the video.
The angle was distant.
There was no audio.
But the patio was visible.
Timestamp 2:16 p.m.
Vanessa appeared first.
She opened the glass door.
Then stepped back inside.
At 2:17, Ethan and Margaret entered the frame.
The image was small but clear enough.
Margaret pushed the documents away.
Ethan moved toward her.
Then both of his arms extended.
Margaret flew backward through the glass.
Ethan covered his mouth.
Vanessa did not move toward Margaret.
Instead, she looked down at her phone.
Rebecca froze the frame.
"Look."
Daniel leaned closer.
Vanessa was holding her phone horizontally.
"Was she recording?" Margaret asked.
Rebecca nodded slowly.
"It looks like it."
Ethan stared.
"Why would she record it?"
Nobody answered.
Rebecca resumed the video.
Margaret stood.
Walked away.
Ethan remained near the door.
Vanessa approached him.
They spoke.
Then Ethan went inside.
Vanessa stayed alone.
She looked around.
Walked to the shattered doorway.
And did something that made Rebecca rewind the footage.
Vanessa bent down.
Picked up a large shard of glass.
Wrapped it in a cloth.
And put it into her handbag.
Margaret felt sick.
"Why?"
Rebecca said, "I don't know."
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"Did your wife collect souvenirs often?"
"No."
Rebecca paused the footage again.
"Could the glass have blood on it?"
Margaret touched her temple.
"Yes."
Daniel's face hardened.
"A sample of Margaret's blood."
Rebecca nodded.
"Possibly."
Ethan looked confused.
"What would she need that for?"
Nobody knew.
Not until the next morning.
At 7:05 a.m., Daniel received a call from the Hale family insurance adviser.
He called Margaret immediately.
"There's a life insurance policy."
Margaret sat up in bed.
"On me?"
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Twenty-five million."
She went cold.
"I never bought a twenty-five-million-dollar policy."
"It was issued eleven months ago."
"Beneficiary?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Hale Succession Capital."
"Who owns that?"
"We're tracing it."
Margaret already knew she would hate the answer.
Daniel continued.
"The medical authorization contains your signature."
"Forged."
"Yes."
"And blood?"
"They may have needed DNA confirmation for the underwriting file."
Margaret remembered the shard Vanessa placed into her handbag.
"Daniel."
"Yes?"
"Who submitted the policy?"
He answered.
"Lucas Brand."
Margaret closed her eyes.
The attempted financial theft had now become something darker.
Vanessa had prepared documents that would increase Ethan's control if Margaret died.
She had taken blood from the scene.
She had helped obtain a secret insurance policy on Margaret's life.
And she had deliberately disabled the security cameras before Ethan pushed Margaret through glass.
The next question was unavoidable.
May you like
Had Vanessa merely taken advantage of Ethan's violence?
Or had she been trying to create it?
