Chapter 3 - The Woman They Called Broke)

The emergency room physician needed seven stitches to close Margaret's temple.

Her shoulder was badly bruised but not fractured.

She had several cuts across her right hand and two small pieces of glass removed from her forearm.

Nothing life-threatening.

Nothing she couldn't survive.

The physician asked whether she felt safe returning home.

Margaret almost laughed.

"No."

Rebecca Sloan was waiting outside the treatment room.

So was Daniel Mercer.

He had arrived in a navy overcoat with a leather folder under one arm and a look on his face Margaret had seen only twice before.

Once when Charles Hale suffered his fatal heart attack.

And once when a federal investigator falsely accused Charles's company of falsifying safety records twenty-two years earlier.

Daniel entered the room and stopped when he saw Margaret's bandage.

"You look terrible."

"Thank you."

"I practiced a softer version in the elevator."

"You should have used it."

Rebecca remained near the door.

Daniel put his folder on the table.

"We need to discuss where you're staying tonight."

"The cottage."

"No."

"Daniel."

"Absolutely not."

Margaret glanced at Rebecca.

The officer spoke.

"Mr. Hale has been instructed not to approach you while we investigate, but the estate is still a shared property at the moment."

"Shared?"

Daniel looked at Margaret.

"That's one of the things Ethan is about to discover."

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

Margaret leaned back against the hospital pillow.

"Tell her."

Daniel removed several documents.

"The Hale estate is owned by Hale Residential Holdings."

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"And Hale Residential Holdings is owned by?"

"The preservation trust."

Rebecca looked at Margaret.

Margaret said, "Ethan has never personally owned the house."

"Does he know?"

"He knew once."

Daniel corrected her.

"He signed an acknowledgment eleven years ago."

Margaret stared at him.

"What acknowledgment?"

"When Charles appointed him temporary estate manager."

"I never saw that."

"Charles didn't want you involved in the argument."

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

That sounded like Charles.

Protecting her from family conflict while creating a different kind of danger.

Rebecca said, "So Mr. Hale has been living in a property controlled by the trust?"

"Yes."

"And he tried to evict the trust protector?"

Daniel nodded.

"After attempting to force her to surrender trust authority."

Rebecca wrote something in her notebook.

"This is getting complicated."

"You have no idea," Margaret said.

Daniel opened another page.

"Margaret, I traced Ashby Ridge."

She sat straighter.

"And?"

"It was incorporated in Delaware eighteen months ago."

"Owner?"

"Layered."

"Daniel."

"The beneficial ownership filing lists a holding company controlled by Vanessa Hale."

Margaret became still.

Rebecca looked up.

"His wife?"

Daniel nodded.

Margaret remembered Vanessa's smile from the window.

Not shock.

Not fear.

Satisfaction.

The image suddenly felt different.

"What were the payments described as?" Margaret asked.

"Strategic consulting, property modernization, brand advisory and executive relocation services."

"Did Vanessa perform any of those services?"

"Not that I can find."

"Does Ethan know she owns the company?"

"We don't know."

Margaret looked away.

Her son was arrogant.

Entitled.

Cruel when challenged.

But four point eight million dollars secretly transferred to his wife's private company?

That could mean Ethan was helping Vanessa steal.

Or it could mean Vanessa was stealing from Ethan too.

Neither possibility comforted Margaret.

Daniel continued.

"There's more."

"Of course there is."

"Ashby Ridge transferred one point three million dollars to another entity six months ago."

"Where?"

"An account connected to a property acquisition in the Cayman Islands."

Rebecca lowered her notebook.

"That's not subtle."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Margaret said, "What property?"

"We're working on it."

"Who authorized the transfers into Ashby Ridge?"

"Ethan personally approved eight."

"And the others?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Nine have your electronic signature."

"Forged."

"Almost certainly."

"Almost?"

"We need forensic confirmation."

"And the remaining four?"

Daniel turned a page.

"They were approved using Charles's old administrative credentials."

Margaret stared at him.

"Charles has been dead for three years."

"Yes."

The room seemed suddenly smaller.

Rebecca moved closer.

"Who still had access to those credentials?"

Daniel answered.

"Only three people should have known they existed."

"Who?"

"Margaret. Me."

He paused.

"And Ethan."

Margaret felt the last piece of hope inside her begin to fracture.

Then Daniel reached into his folder and removed a photocopy.

"There is one additional problem."

He placed the page in front of Margaret.

It was page seventeen from the trust transfer packet Ethan had pushed toward her.

Near the bottom was a notary acknowledgment.

Margaret read the name.

Lucas Brand.

She knew it.

Not personally.

But she had seen it recently.

"Where?"

Daniel watched her.

"Margaret?"

She searched her memory.

Then remembered.

A Christmas card.

Vanessa had left a stack of cards on the hall table.

One envelope had been addressed to Vanessa and Ethan.

From Lucas and Claire Brand.

The photograph showed Vanessa standing on a yacht beside a blond man.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"He's Vanessa's friend."

"More than that."

Daniel placed a second photograph on the table.

Vanessa Hale and Lucas Brand leaving a hotel in Manhattan eight weeks earlier.

The timestamp was 1:14 in the morning.

Rebecca looked between them.

"Who took this?"

"A private investigator."

Margaret's eyes hardened.

"You've been investigating Vanessa."

Daniel sat down.

"No."

"Then who hired the investigator?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

That frightened Margaret more than anything else he had said.

"Daniel."

He finally met her eyes.

"Charles did."

Margaret stopped breathing.

"Charles has been dead for three years."

"I know."

"Then explain."

Daniel reached into his folder.

He removed a sealed envelope.

Margaret recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her husband's.

Across the front, Charles Hale had written five words.

FOR MARGARET, IF ETHAN BETRAYS HER.
