Chapter 5 - Vanessa's Second Plan)

Ethan did not sleep that night.

Not because he was worried about his mother.

Because every card in his wallet had stopped working.

At 11:43 p.m., he attempted to pay for a room at the Hartford Grand after police instructed him to remain away from Margaret.

His primary black card was declined.

His secondary card was declined.

The account he used for travel expenses showed restricted access.

The family office administrator would not return his calls.

By midnight, Ethan was shouting into his phone.

"This is my money."

The bank representative remained calm.

"Mr. Hale, the account is owned by Hale Family Preservation Trust."

"I'm the beneficiary."

"Distributions have been temporarily suspended."

"By who?"

"I am not authorized to discuss trust administration."

"My father created that account."

"I'm sorry, sir."

Ethan disconnected.

Vanessa sat across the hotel suite.

Unlike her husband, she was quiet.

Too quiet.

Ethan threw his phone onto the sofa.

"My mother did this."

Vanessa took a sip of water.

"Obviously."

"Daniel helped her."

"Obviously."

"I'll sue them both."

"With what money?"

Ethan turned.

Vanessa's tone had been too sharp.

"What?"

She placed the glass down.

"I said you need to think before you start another war."

"Another?"

"You shoved your mother through a door."

"She lost her balance."

Vanessa stared at him.

"You put both hands on her."

"Whose side are you on?"

"Yours."

The answer came quickly.

Almost automatically.

Ethan paced toward the window.

"I need access to my accounts."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Do you have anything that's completely separate from the trust?"

"My brokerage account."

"How much?"

"Six hundred thousand, maybe."

Vanessa's expression changed so slightly Ethan didn't notice.

"And the Greenwich account?"

"Trust-controlled."

"The Manhattan apartment?"

"Corporate housing."

"The cars?"

"Company-owned."

Vanessa's fingers stopped moving.

"What about the yacht share?"

"Trust investment partnership."

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time since their marriage, she looked genuinely confused.

"You told me you owned those things."

"I control them."

"That isn't the same thing."

Ethan turned around.

"Why does it matter?"

Vanessa stood.

"Because your mother just froze everything."

"Temporarily."

"Are you sure?"

"Daniel can't cut me out permanently."

Vanessa picked up her purse.

"Where are you going?"

"To make a call."

"To who?"

"My lawyer."

Ethan laughed.

"Since when do you have your own lawyer?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Since I married a man whose family has four hundred million dollars."

Ethan's smile disappeared.

She walked into the bedroom and closed the door.

Then locked it.

Vanessa removed a second phone from the lining of her handbag.

She called Lucas Brand.

He answered immediately.

"Tell me you have the signatures."

"I don't."

Silence.

"What happened?"

"Margaret refused."

"And?"

"Ethan lost control."

"Define lost control."

"He shoved her."

Lucas cursed.

Vanessa went to the bathroom and turned on the faucet.

"She activated some trust clause. Everything is frozen."

"Everything?"

"Yes."

"Then you need to leave."

"I know."

"Tonight."

"I can't. Police are watching the house, and Ethan is with me."

Lucas lowered his voice.

"Did they find Ashby Ridge?"

Vanessa looked at the closed bathroom door.

"I don't know."

"If they activated a forensic review, they will."

"You said the layers were secure."

"They were secure against normal review. Not against a full trust fraud investigation."

Vanessa gripped the phone.

"What about Cayman?"

"Do not say that word on the phone."

"You told me this phone was safe."

"Nothing is safe now."

Vanessa looked into the mirror.

For the first time, the woman staring back looked frightened.

"What should I do?"

"Get the second folder."

She froze.

"It's still in the estate."

"Then get it."

"Police are there."

"The folder contains the original side agreement. If they find it, you're done."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Where's Ethan?"

"In the other room."

"Keep him there."

"He doesn't know?"

"Not everything."

Lucas was quiet.

Then he asked, "Does he know Ashby Ridge belongs to you?"

"No."

"Then make sure he never finds out."

Vanessa ended the call.

When she opened the bathroom door, Ethan was standing directly outside.

She startled.

"Who were you talking to?"

"My attorney."

"What's his name?"

Vanessa smiled.

"You wouldn't know him."

Ethan stared at the second phone in her hand.

"That's not your usual phone."

"It's for private matters."

"What private matters?"

Vanessa walked past him.

"You're paranoid."

He grabbed her arm.

"Who were you talking to?"

Vanessa looked down at his hand.

Then up at him.

"Remove your hand."

Ethan released her.

But something had changed.

For the first time that day, his anger was no longer directed toward Margaret.

Vanessa put the phone back in her purse.

"I'm going to sleep."

Ethan remained standing.

After Vanessa entered the bedroom, he picked up his phone.

He called Daniel.

This time Daniel answered.

"What?"

Ethan hesitated.

"What is Ashby Ridge?"

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"Daniel."

"Ask your wife."

The call ended.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Behind the bedroom door, Vanessa was already packing a suitcase.

Neither of them knew that at the same moment, Margaret and Daniel were reviewing a newly recovered copy of the trust transfer agreement.

Page seventeen contained Margaret's supposed signature.

Page eighteen contained something worse.

A sale agreement.

If Margaret had signed the packet, Hale Residential Holdings would have been transferred within thirty days to a private investment entity.

The buyer was not Ethan.

The buyer was Ashby Ridge Advisory.

Vanessa had not merely intended to steal money from the Hale family.

May you like

She had intended to buy the Hale estate with the Hale family's own stolen money.

Then leave Ethan with the debt.
