Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Reckoning)

The Hale Meridian board gathered at three o'clock.

Nobody expected Margaret.

Several directors had known her for decades.

To them, she was Charles Hale's elegant wife.

The woman who hosted charity dinners.

Remembered birthdays.

Asked about grandchildren.

Sent flowers after surgeries.

Margaret entered the boardroom wearing a dark blue suit and a white bandage at her temple.

Every conversation stopped.

Daniel walked beside her.

Two independent trust advisers followed.

Margaret took Charles's old chair.

Nobody objected.

Owen Pike, the chief financial officer, cleared his throat.

"Margaret, perhaps we should postpone."

"No."

"Given everything that's happened."

"Everything that's happened is why we're here."

She looked around the table.

"Twelve months ago, how many of you knew Ethan planned to pledge trust assets against outside financing?"

Silence.

Owen raised one hand slightly.

"I knew he was exploring financing structures."

"That wasn't my question."

Owen lowered his hand.

Margaret continued.

"How many knew payments were being made to Ashby Ridge Advisory?"

Three directors raised their hands.

"Did anyone verify who owned it?"

Nobody answered.

Margaret nodded.

"How many knew Northstar Capital had negotiated enforcement rights against trust-owned assets?"

This time nobody moved.

"Excellent."

She opened the folder.

"Then we're all equally embarrassed."

One director, Thomas Reed, shifted uncomfortably.

"Margaret, Ethan represented that he had authority."

"He did have authority."

Thomas relaxed slightly.

Margaret continued.

"Delegated authority."

The relaxation disappeared.

"Authority that could be revoked."

She turned toward Daniel.

He distributed documents.

Margaret spoke.

"As of two sixteen p.m. three days ago, the protection clause was triggered."

Owen read quickly.

"You're suspending Ethan indefinitely?"

"I am suspending him pending investigation."

"You can't run development operations yourself."

"I don't intend to."

Margaret looked at a woman seated near the far end.

"Marian Cole."

Marian looked surprised.

She had spent eighteen years running Hale Meridian's industrial property group.

"Yes?"

"Would you accept appointment as interim chief operating executive?"

The room became still.

Marian glanced at Daniel.

Then Margaret.

"Yes."

"Good."

Owen objected.

"This is highly irregular."

Margaret turned toward him.

"So is laundering consulting payments through the chief development officer's wife."

Owen froze.

Several directors looked at him.

Margaret watched his face.

Interesting.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"Mr. Pike," Daniel said, "did you approve payments to Ashby Ridge?"

Owen swallowed.

"Some."

"Based on what?"

"Invoices."

"Who verified services?"

"Ethan's office."

"Did you know Vanessa Hale controlled Ashby Ridge?"

"No."

Margaret studied him.

Owen would not meet her eyes.

She remembered Charles once saying that guilty people rarely look away at the accusation.

They look away at the detail they fear you already know.

Margaret changed direction.

"Who introduced Northstar Capital to Ethan?"

Owen's head rose.

There.

That was the detail.

"I don't remember."

Marian Cole spoke.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

"Owen did."

Owen stared at her.

Marian continued.

"You brought their managing partner to Ethan's birthday dinner last year."

"That's not an introduction in a business sense."

"You emailed me the next morning and said Northstar could solve Ethan's funding problem."

Margaret leaned back.

"Owen."

His face became gray.

"Did Vanessa pay you?"

"No."

"Did Lucas Brand?"

"No."

"Did Northstar?"

Silence.

Daniel stood.

"Your answer matters."

Owen's mouth opened.

Then he reached for his water.

His hand shook.

Margaret understood.

"How much?"

Owen whispered, "Two hundred thousand."

The room erupted.

Margaret did not raise her voice.

"For what?"

"Consulting."

"Try again."

Owen stared at the table.

"For introductions."

"To whom?"

"Northstar."

"And?"

"Ashby Ridge."

"Did you know Vanessa owned it?"

Owen closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The boardroom went silent.

Margaret felt something inside her settle.

There it was.

The infection had spread further than Ethan.

She looked toward Daniel.

"Contact law enforcement."

Owen stood.

"Margaret, please."

"Sit down."

"I can explain."

"Then explain it to investigators."

Owen's shoulders collapsed.

Margaret turned to the board.

"Effective immediately, Owen Pike is suspended."

Nobody objected.

"All transactions approved through his office in the past twenty-four months will be independently reviewed."

Thomas Reed spoke carefully.

"Margaret, this could damage the company."

Margaret looked directly at him.

"No. Concealing it would damage the company."

She closed the folder.

"My husband spent forty-two years building a business that employed families, funded pensions and survived because people trusted the Hale name. We will not protect that name by lying."

Marian nodded.

One by one, other directors did too.

Margaret stood.

The meeting was nearly over when Daniel received a message.

He read it.

Then handed the phone to Margaret.

Federal investigators had entered Vanessa's hotel room using a search warrant.

Vanessa was not there.

Her passport was gone.

Her suitcase was gone.

But she had left something behind.

A handwritten list.

At the top was Margaret's name.

Below it were three dates.

The first two were days Margaret had suffered unexplained accidents during the past year.

A fall on the back staircase.

A medication mix-up that had sent her to the hospital.

The third date was three days ago.

The day Ethan pushed her through the glass.

May you like

Margaret stared at the list.

Maybe the shattered door had not been Vanessa's first attempt.
