Arthur challenged his legal paternity but did not disappear from the twins’ lives.

During the first hearing, the judge asked whether Arthur wanted all parental responsibilities removed immediately.

Arthur looked at the two babies sleeping beside Brooke.

He hesitated.

Then he requested time.

Although they were not biologically his children, he had held them after birth, chosen their names, and spent their first weeks believing he was their father.

Brooke’s lies were not their fault.

Arthur eventually withdrew his request to abandon all responsibility. Instead, the court created a temporary arrangement while Grant’s obligations were established.

Arthur attended parenting classes and found work at a smaller real estate office.

For the first time in his life, he lived without someone rescuing him.

His mother also stopped making excuses for him.

She apologized to Victoria for hiding the medical truth and for remaining silent during the marriage.

“I thought protecting him was love,” she said.

“Sometimes love requires telling someone what they refuse to hear,” Victoria replied.

Brooke lost custody temporarily after attempting to flee the state with the twins. She entered a supervised rehabilitation and counseling program ordered by the court.

Grant was required to provide financial support.

Arthur visited the children every Sunday.

He never referred to them as proof of his success again. He simply read to them, warmed their bottles, and learned how to care for two small human beings who had been placed at the center of an adult deception.

Victoria heard about his progress through his mother.
