Victoria entered the bank vault with Evelyn and a federal investigator.

Inside were incorporation papers, research notebooks and video recordings made by Eleanor.

The first recording explained Meridian’s hidden history.

Eleanor and Helena had developed a security system capable of detecting patterns across enormous networks. Margaret provided investors while Victoria created the commercial company that transformed their research into a legal product.

But Helena wanted complete control.

Eleanor transferred her interest to Victoria to prevent Helena from selling the system.

The final recording had been made shortly before Eleanor entered protective custody.

“I told Victoria I was leaving for a medical conference,” Eleanor said. “I did not tell her I might never return. If she knew, Helena would use her to find me.”

Victoria watched without moving.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

But she had allowed Victoria to mourn her for nine years.

The investigator opened the final box.

It contained evidence that Eleanor had remained alive for at least seven years after her supposed death.

The most recent document was two years old.

Its return address belonged to a remote research facility in northern Maine.

Daniel checked the property.

It had been abandoned for months.

Before leaving the vault, Victoria found a sealed envelope bearing her name.

Inside was a Meridian ownership certificate transferring Eleanor’s remaining shares to someone identified only as E.W.

The transfer had occurred three weeks earlier.
