Chapter 1 - The Marriage Everyone Envied

Six years earlier, Arthur Thompson had appeared to be the perfect husband.
He sent flowers to Victoria’s office, attended charity dinners at her side, and told everyone he was proud of the company she had built. In photographs, he always stood close enough to look devoted but never so close that he appeared dependent on her.
That detail had once impressed Victoria.
She had founded Thompson Meridian Technologies before meeting him, transforming a small software consultancy into an international security company. By thirty-four, she employed more than eight hundred people and had offices in four countries.
Arthur worked in luxury real estate. He was charming, ambitious, and skilled at making strangers feel important. When he proposed after eleven months, Victoria believed she had found someone who understood the pressure of building a life from nothing.
Brooke Hayes had been Victoria’s closest friend since college.
Brooke helped choose the wedding dress. She stood beside Victoria during the ceremony. She even held Victoria’s hands before the church doors opened and promised that Arthur was the man Victoria deserved.
For years, the three of them seemed inseparable.
Brooke joined them for holidays, dinners, and weekend trips. After her own engagement ended, Victoria gave her a position in the company’s charitable foundation.
Arthur often praised Victoria for helping her friend.
“You always rescue people,” he once told her.
Victoria had smiled.
She did not understand that Arthur was not admiring her kindness.
He was studying it.
The first sign came on a rainy Thursday evening.
Victoria returned home earlier than expected after a meeting was canceled. Arthur’s car was in the driveway, although he had told her he was showing a property across town.
Brooke’s car was parked two streets away.
Inside the house, Victoria found two wine glasses in the kitchen sink. A woman’s perfume lingered in the upstairs hallway. On the bedroom floor lay a small diamond earring Victoria had seen Brooke wear dozens of times.
Victoria held it in her palm for almost a minute.
Then she placed it inside an envelope.

She did not confront Arthur.
