Chapter 30 - She Never Told You

Three months later, Meridian opened its second family support center.
The employee records had been secured. Julian awaited trial. Grant’s assets were frozen. Brooke continued supervised counseling and visits with the twins.
Arthur had changed most visibly.
He lived in a modest home near his mother and worked for a small property firm. He no longer asked Victoria to forgive him or recognize his progress.
He simply cared for Ethan and Olivia.
Victoria remained chief executive, but she no longer believed Meridian belonged only to her.
The company had been built through her work, Eleanor’s research, Helena’s code, Margaret’s money and years of concealed agreements.
During the opening ceremony, Daniel approached Victoria.
“Someone is asking for you.”
A young woman stood near the entrance.
She was perhaps twenty-six, dressed in a dark suit and carrying a narrow metal case.
“My name is Elizabeth Ward,” she said. “My mother was Helena.”
Victoria glanced at the initials on Eleanor’s share certificate.
E.W.
“You own my mother’s shares.”
Elizabeth did not answer.
Instead, she opened the case.
Inside was an original Meridian incorporation certificate.
The document named three founders.
Victoria Thompson.
Helena Ward.
And Eleanor Ward.
Victoria looked up.
“That isn’t my mother’s last name.”
“It was before she changed it.”
“Why would she hide that?”
Elizabeth’s expression softened.
“Because Eleanor Thompson wasn’t only your mother.”
She placed a second document on the table.
It was a birth certificate.
Victoria saw Helena’s name first.
Then her own.
The space beside “relationship” contained a single word.
Daughter.
Victoria’s hands went cold.
Elizabeth stepped closer.
“My mother sent me because Eleanor disappeared again.”
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Elizabeth looked toward the Meridian building.
“Because she left a message for both of us.”
She activated a small recorder.
Eleanor’s voice filled the room.
“If Victoria is hearing this, Helena has finally told her the truth.”
The recording paused.
Then another voice spoke from somewhere behind Eleanor.
A voice Victoria recognized.
Margaret Sloan.
“She never told you which daughter she chose.”
The recording ended.
Across the street, a black car pulled away from the curb.
Victoria saw a woman sitting in the back seat.

The woman turned toward her for only a second.
She had Eleanor’s eyes.
