Chapter 13 - The Husband Who Came First
The third Kenneth said the wounded version believed he loved me, the surgical version believed I betrayed him, and he remembered both lives. Maya used a verification phrase that exposed him as compromised.
Charles called him Prototype Seven, the first successful identity vessel. Synthetic skin concealed metal and wires. He admitted he had lived parts of my marriage as an emotional baseline.
The blood case began counting down. The children spoke with my voice, repeating memories of the red door and the girl I left behind.
Helena offered three choices: incinerate the blood, preserve it, or transfer it to the receiver network. I rejected all three and ordered physical isolation of the case.
Prototype Seven attacked Maya. Celeste was wounded. I electrocuted him through his exposed metal frame. The receiver network stopped.
Celeste revealed a photograph saying Subject 001 had been selected for release and Subject 002 for retention. Then she said she had originally been Subject 001 and that the numbers were changed after my escape.
