Chapter 1 - The Safe That Changed Everything

Three hours earlier...

I had been preparing for our sixth wedding anniversary.

Kenneth always claimed he hated surprises.

Ironically...

He had become one.

For six years, he had built the image of the perfect husband.

Successful financial consultant.

Volunteer at children's charities.

Speaker at business conferences.

Beloved son.

Trusted friend.

The kind of man strangers admired after meeting him once.

People often told me,

"You're lucky."

Sometimes I believed them.

Until strange things started happening.

Money disappeared from our joint account.

Not thousands.

Hundreds.

Small enough to ignore.

Large enough to notice.

Kenneth blamed accounting errors.

Bank delays.

Credit card adjustments.

Tax calculations.

Always another explanation.

Then my brother Justin called.

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Maya has been acting strange."

"How?"

"She's hiding things."

I almost laughed.

"So is Kenneth."

Neither of us realized those two sentences would destroy both our families.

Two weeks later...

A package arrived without a return address.

Inside were five photographs.

Kenneth entering a downtown hotel.

Maya entering five minutes later.

Kenneth leaving the next morning.

Holding Maya's hand.

I convinced myself they were fake.

Edited.

Manipulated.

Until another envelope arrived.

Hotel invoices.

Signed under fake names.

Paid with the same corporate credit card Kenneth insisted he used only for work.

Still...

Something felt wrong.

Too obvious.

Too convenient.

Almost as if someone wanted us to discover the affair.

I hired a private investigator anyway.

Seven days later...

He placed a thick folder on my dining table.

"I've handled hundreds of cheating spouses."

He paused.

"This one is different."

He handed me surveillance photographs.

Kenneth and Maya met often.

But rarely touched.

Sometimes they argued.

Sometimes they exchanged sealed envelopes.

Sometimes they entered office buildings instead of hotels.

The investigator frowned.

"It almost looks like..."

"They're conducting business."

"Exactly."

"But why fake an affair?"

Neither of us had an answer.

Until yesterday.

The investigator called at midnight.

His voice shook.

"I broke into Kenneth's office."

"You what?"

"There wasn't time."

"What happened?"

"I found a safe."

"And?"

"It was empty."

"Except for one envelope."

My heartbeat accelerated.

"What was inside?"

"He never let me open it."

"Why not?"

"Because someone shot at me."

The call ended.

I never heard from him again.

This morning...

Police informed me his car had been found abandoned beside the river.

No body.

No phone.

No investigator.

Only blood on the driver's seat.

Hours later...

The hospital called.

"Mrs. Rollins?"

"Yes."

"Your husband has been involved in an accident."

"We need you to come immediately."

Then they added one sentence.

"He wasn't alone."

I expected another woman.

I never imagined...

My brother's wife.

Now...

Standing outside Operating Room Three...

I finally understood.

The affair had never been the real story.

It had merely hidden the truth.

I looked down at the six numbers Kenneth had whispered.

684291.

His office safe.

Whatever waited inside...

Someone had already killed to protect it.

Across the hallway...

A janitor slowly pushed his cleaning cart past me.

He never looked up.

But as he passed...

He quietly whispered six words.

"Don't open it here."

Then he kept walking.

I spun around.

He had disappeared.

Yet tucked beneath my folder...

I found a tiny black key that hadn't been there seconds earlier.

Attached to it...

May you like

A handwritten note.

"This unlocks the second safe."
