The dinner began beautifully.
Marjorie gave a speech.
She talked about family.
About gratitude.
About Serena's upcoming wedding.
Robert smiled.
Serena lifted her glass.
The relatives applauded.
Clara watched quietly.
Then Marjorie raised her glass again.
"To the daughter who has always made us proud."
Everyone looked at Serena.
Serena smiled.
Clara lowered her eyes.
Then Marjorie added,
"And to remembering that some people need to learn where they belong."
The room became uncomfortable.
Clara looked up.
Marjorie smiled directly at her.
That was the moment Clara knew there would be no peaceful conversation.
