Chapter 15 - The Door That Has Not Opened Yet

The family mansion remained silent for three days after Thanksgiving.

Robert stopped speaking to Marjorie.

Serena postponed her wedding.

The relatives stopped calling.

Clara continued investigating.

Every answer created another question.

The apartment payment was traced.

It had not come from Marjorie.

It had not come from Robert.

It had not come from Serena.

It had come from an account connected to the original trust.

An account that should not have existed.

Clara returned to the attorney.

"I want access."

The attorney shook his head.

"You don't have authority."

"My name is on the trust."

"Your name is on one part of it."

"Then who controls the rest?"

The attorney looked at her for a long moment.

"I think you already know."

Clara's heart sank.

She remembered the photograph.

The child.

The secret.

The initials.

The hidden beneficiary.

She took out her phone.

There was one new message.

A photograph.

It showed the same man from the old photograph.

Older now.

Standing outside the Vale mansion.

Clara zoomed in.

Beside him stood a woman.

Clara recognized her immediately.

Serena.

Her sister.

Clara stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

He has been waiting for you to discover the truth.

Clara's breathing slowed.

She looked toward the mansion.

The front door opened.

Someone stepped outside.

It was Serena.

But she wasn't alone.

A man stood behind her.

Clara recognized him from the photograph.

The man who had supposedly disappeared from the family's history decades ago.

Robert's secret.

Marjorie's fear.

The hidden trust.

The mansion.

The money.

All of it suddenly pointed toward the same person.

Clara stepped out of her car.

Serena looked directly at her.

She did not look surprised.

She looked relieved.

Clara stopped halfway up the driveway.

"How long have you known?"

Serena swallowed.

"Long enough."

"About the trust?"

Serena shook her head.

"About him."

Clara looked past her.

The man remained silent.

Then he finally spoke.

"Clara."

She froze.

Nobody outside her family knew that particular nickname.

The man took one step forward.

"I owe you an explanation."

Clara looked at Serena.

Then at the mansion.

Then at the man.

"About the money?"

He shook his head.

"About everything."

Clara's phone rang.

The caller ID showed the same unknown number.

She answered.

A voice said,

"Do not let that man inside the house."

Clara looked at him.

The man smiled faintly.

And behind him, Serena quietly locked the front door.

Clara realized she had spent three years uncovering the wrong secret.

The mansion was never the real prize.

The money was never the real reason.

And whoever had been controlling the family trust was finally ready to tell Clara why her name had been placed on everything.

But before Clara could ask the question, Robert's car came racing up the driveway.

He got out.

His face was pale.

He looked at the man standing beside Serena.

Then at Clara.

And whispered the one sentence that made her blood run cold.

"Clara, you were never supposed to meet him."

The man behind Serena smiled.

And Clara understood that Thanksgiving had not exposed the family's secret.

May you like

It had only opened the door.

The real story was still waiting on the other side.
