Chapter 2 - The Signature
Clara spent the next six months trying to prove that she was wrong.
She wanted to be wrong.
If the records were simply a clerical mistake, she could laugh about it.
If someone had entered her name incorrectly, the problem could be fixed.
But every answer created another question.
There was a company.
The company owned a property.
The property was connected to the Vale mansion.
The mansion had been refinanced.
The refinancing documents contained Clara's information.
Her social security records had been used.
Her military address had been listed.
And beneath one document was a signature that looked almost exactly like hers.
Clara stared at it.
She knew immediately.
It was not her signature.
Someone had practiced it.
The realization made her physically cold.
She called the institution listed on the document.
The representative confirmed the paperwork.
Clara asked when the application had been submitted.
Three years earlier.
The same month she had been deployed.
She checked her old records.
She had been thousands of miles away.
She could not have signed it.
Someone else had.
Someone who had access to her information.
Someone who knew exactly how to make the transaction look legitimate.
Clara thought about her family.
She thought about Serena.
Then she thought about Marjorie.
She refused to accuse anyone without proof.
So she kept digging.
The deeper she went, the more complicated the structure became.
The mansion was not simply a house.
It was collateral.
Several family assets had been bundled together.
Loans had been taken against them.
Payments had been made from different accounts.
And Clara's name had become the quiet guarantee behind the entire arrangement.
The strangest part was that Robert seemed unaware.
His name appeared on some documents.
But not the ones that mattered most.
Clara finally understood why.
If the financial arrangement collapsed, the person carrying the greatest exposure would not be Robert.
