Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Curtain

Marjorie had always known how to control a room.
She could silence Robert with one look.
She could make Serena feel adored with a sentence.
She could make Clara question herself without ever raising her voice.
But financial documents were different.
Numbers did not care about tone.
They did not care who was favored.
They did not care who sat at the head of the table.
Clara began building a timeline.
Every transfer.
Every account.
Every property change.
Every signature.
Every unexplained expense.
The pattern finally became clear.
Someone had been protecting Serena's lifestyle by moving financial obligations away from her.
And someone had been using Clara's identity as the shield.
Clara confronted Marjorie one final time before Thanksgiving.
"You used my name."
Marjorie stared at her.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know enough."
"Then why are you asking me?"
"Because I want to hear you say it."
Marjorie stood.
"You think this family owes you something?"
Clara's expression hardened.
"No."
She paused.
"I think you owe Dad the truth."
Marjorie's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Clara saw it.
Fear.
Not anger.
May you like
Fear.
That was when Clara understood the secret was bigger than the mansion.
