Chapter 12 - The Person They Hid

The name was not Serena.
It was not Marjorie.
It was not Robert.
It was someone Clara had never heard of.
Someone connected to the original family trust.
Someone whose existence explained why the money had been moved.
Clara spent the next forty-eight hours following the trail.
She discovered old correspondence.
Property transfers.
A private settlement.
A photograph.
The photograph showed Robert when he was younger.
Beside him stood a woman Clara did not recognize.
And in the woman's arms was a child.
Clara stared at the photograph.
The child looked familiar.
Not because Clara knew him.
Because the child looked like Robert.
She turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
There was also a sentence written in Marjorie's handwriting.
"Nobody can ever know."
Clara sat down.
Suddenly the financial mystery was no longer just financial.
The mansion.
The trusts.
The hidden accounts.
The forged documents.
The money.
All of it appeared to connect to a secret that Robert had buried before Clara was born.
And Marjorie had spent decades protecting it.

Why had they used her name?
