Clara finally understood the missing piece when she found an old bank agreement.
The debt attached to the mansion was not originally a mortgage.
It was a settlement.
Someone had owed money.
A significant amount.
And instead of paying it directly, the family had placed assets into a structure designed to conceal the obligation.
Clara's identity had been added later.
She had been made the legal successor to the obligation.
But there was another document.
A release.
It suggested Clara was not supposed to inherit the debt permanently.
Someone had changed the agreement.
Someone had altered the terms after the original arrangement.
Clara confronted Marjorie.
Her mother looked exhausted.
"You finally found it."
Clara stopped.
"You knew."
"Of course I knew."
"Why?"
Marjorie looked toward the window.
"Because I was trying to protect this family."
"You protected Serena."
"I protected everyone."
"You used me."
Marjorie closed her eyes.
"I did what I had to do."
"No."
Clara's voice became quiet.
"You did what you wanted to do."
Marjorie looked at her.
"You have no idea what would happen if the truth came out."
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
Marjorie whispered,
"Because the person who would lose everything isn't Serena."
Clara stared at her.
"Who is it?"
Marjorie did not answer.
