Chapter 9 - The Jet That Never Reached Zurich

The jet left Briarwood at 6:12 a.m.

It never filed a flight plan for Zurich.

Federal radar tracked it northeast for forty-three minutes before the transponder vanished over the mountains. By then, Clara, Adrian, Agent Hale, and Detective Ortiz were aboard a government aircraft following the last known route.

Julian remained in custody.

Malcolm insisted on coming.

"Eleanor knows the old landing sites," he said. "You don't."

Hale did not trust him, but Clara did not trust Hale either. Distrust had become the only honest currency among them.

She sat across from Malcolm while the aircraft climbed through gray clouds.

"Why did Naomi help her?"

"Maybe she didn't," Malcolm replied.

"The photograph showed them boarding together."

"Photographs showed Julian meeting Adrian. You assumed the worst before knowing the rest."

"The worst was still bad enough."

Malcolm looked down at his weathered hands. "Naomi's husband believed Arthur killed his father. Eleanor may have promised proof."

"Or Naomi was involved from the beginning."

"Possible."

Clara studied him. "You sound almost relieved that no one can be trusted."

"Trust is how men like Arthur and organizations like the consortium recruit servants. They give you one truth, then build ten lies around it."

"You served him."

"I did."

"Why?"

Malcolm looked out the window. "Because he saved Julian's life."

Clara had never heard this story.

"Julian was born with a heart condition," Malcolm continued. "We had no money for the surgery. Arthur arranged a specialist, paid every bill, and asked for nothing in return. Or so I believed. Years later, he asked me to carry the blue ledger from Rotterdam."

"And you agreed."

"I owed him my son."

"My father collected people through gratitude."

"Yes."

The answer contained no defense.

Agent Hale approached with a map.

"The aircraft may have descended below radar near Black Ridge. There is an abandoned Ashford mining property in that area."

Clara recognized the name from trust reports. Black Ridge had produced silver until the late eighties, then closed after a tunnel collapse.

"There is a runway?"

"A short one, built for executives."

Malcolm shook his head. "There is also an underground rail spur. Arthur used it to move sealed cargo when weather grounded planes."

Hale stared at him. "That detail is not in any federal record."

"That was the point."

They landed at a military field and drove toward the mine. Snow began falling as the road narrowed through dense forest.

At the locked perimeter gate, they found the missing jet.

Its cabin was empty.

There was blood on one seat and Naomi's phone beneath it.

Ortiz played the last audio recording.

Wind and engine noise filled the speaker. Then Eleanor's voice:

"You promised me immunity."

Naomi answered, "I promised you a chance to testify."

A third voice spoke from the cockpit.

Claire.

"Neither of you has earned immunity."

A struggle followed. The recording ended with a sharp cry.

Clara felt a chill unrelated to the snow.

"Claire took the plane," Adrian said.

"Or intercepted it," Hale replied.

They followed tracks from the runway to a steel door built into the mountain. The door carried the open-eye symbol.

Malcolm placed his hand against the metal.

"The Zurich archive isn't in Zurich," he said.

Hale's expression hardened. "Explain."

"Zurich is the legal address. The physical archive was moved after Samuel Grant died. Arthur divided its contents among three sites. Black Ridge held the biometric registry."

"You knew this all along?" Clara asked.

"I knew one site existed. I didn't know which part it held."

A keypad beside the door lit up.

INSERT TOKEN.

The red coin was gone.

Hale ordered technicians forward, but Malcolm stopped them.

"Force it, and the registry destroys itself."

"Then how do we enter?"

Clara looked at the symbol and remembered something from childhood. Her father used to press an old red game piece into her palm before business trips.

"The coin is not the only token," she said.

She removed her wedding ring.

Inside the band was a tiny red stone Julian claimed had belonged to his grandmother. Clara had never questioned why Eleanor chose it for their ceremony.

Malcolm stared at the ring.

"Arthur's seal," he whispered.

Clara pressed the stone against the reader.

The steel door unlocked.

A long tunnel descended into the mountain.

Emergency lights glowed to life one by one.

At the far end, a woman screamed.

They ran.

The tunnel opened into a circular chamber lined with old servers and steel cabinets. Naomi was tied to a chair. Eleanor stood beside a console with a cut across her forehead. Claire held a gun between them.

"You're late," Claire said.

Clara looked from her to the biometric scanner.

On its glass surface was a fresh handprint in blood.

Claire smiled.

"The archive has already identified one of Arthur's daughters."

The console displayed a single result.

PRIMARY BIOLOGICAL MATCH CONFIRMED.

But the name beneath it had been erased.
