Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Shared Her Face

No one in the conference room moved.
The woman on the screen stepped into the light.
She had Clara's eyes, Clara's cheekbones, and the same slight tilt of the head when studying someone she did not trust. But her hair was silver-blond, and a thin scar crossed her left eyebrow.
"My name is Claire Rowan," she said. "And Arthur Ashford stole my life."
Federal Agent Hale reached for the conference controls. The system ignored him.
"This transmission is internal," he said. "Someone has access to the building network."
Claire smiled. "Your networks have never been as private as you think."
Clara stood. "Where are you?"
"Close enough to watch you choose."
"Choose what?"
"Whether you want the truth or the fortune."
Julian leaned toward the screen. "You set us up."
"You required very little encouragement. A mistress, some debt, a frightened mother, and a wounded brother. Arthur surrounded Clara with weak people. I merely opened the doors."
Clara did not look at Julian.
"Did you abduct Adrian?"
"Richard did. He believed pain would make your family honest. He was wrong. Pain only makes liars louder."
"Are you Celeste's daughter?"
Claire's expression softened for the first time. "Yes."
"Am I?"
"That depends on which crime Arthur committed."
"Stop speaking in riddles."
"Two girls were born. One to Lillian. One to Celeste. One girl had a congenital heart defect and was not expected to survive. Arthur needed a healthy heir recognized by the Ashford charter. Records were changed. Mothers were separated from children. Years later, one girl grew up in a mansion. The other grew up under borrowed names in institutions funded by secret accounts."
Clara gripped the table.
"Which girl am I?"
"The Zurich archive contains the answer."
Agent Hale spoke. "Ms. Rowan, surrender and provide the archive information. We can protect you."
Claire laughed. "Your agency protected Arthur for thirty years."
"We are not discussing history."
"History is the only thing anyone in this room is discussing."
The screen changed to a scanned page from the blue ledger. Names and payments covered it. Among them was the seal of a federal office.
Hale's face went still.
Claire noticed.
"You recognize it, Agent Hale."
"That seal has been obsolete for decades."
"But the men who used it are not all dead."
The image returned to Claire.
"At noon tomorrow, the Zurich archive will open for a single beneficiary. Clara must bring the red coin and submit to biometric verification. If she refuses, the archive will seal for another twenty years."
"Why me?" Clara asked.
"Because Arthur registered you as the primary heir."
"Then why do you call me sister?"
"Because paperwork does not determine blood."
"Come with me."
Claire's eyes darkened. "I cannot enter while the consortium believes I am dead."
"But you have been manipulating everyone from the shadows."
"Shadows were the only inheritance I received."
The transmission flickered.
"Do not trust Agent Hale," Claire said. "Do not trust Naomi. And whatever Julian promises, remember that he began betraying you before he ever met me."
Julian struck the table. "You contacted me two years ago."
Clara turned toward him.
Two years.
The affair with Sienna had begun eight months earlier. The financial theft had begun years before that.
Claire smiled sadly. "Tell her about the first transfer, Julian. The one you made on your wedding night."
The screen went black.
Clara looked at Julian.
"What first transfer?"
He stared at the cuff around his wrist.
"It wasn't money."
"What was it?"
"A document from your father's private safe."
"Which document?"
"The sealed marriage addendum."
Clara had never heard of it.
Agent Hale dismissed the technicians and closed the conference room door.
"Mrs. Vale, before he continues, you need to understand that anything concerning the Zurich archive may fall under national security restrictions."
Clara looked at him. "Claire told me not to trust you."
"Claire is a suspect in kidnapping, attempted murder, and financial crimes."
"That is not a denial."
Hale's jaw tightened.
Julian watched them both, calculating.
"The addendum," Clara said. "Now."
Julian drew a breath. "Your father made me sign it before the ceremony. It said that if your marriage ended because of fraud, infidelity, or attempted interference with the trust, I would forfeit all marital claims and submit to a private accounting."
"That sounds like him."
"There was another clause. If you died without a child, certain Ashford assets would pass to your surviving spouse for one year before reverting to Adrian."
Clara felt nausea rise.
"You stole the document because you wanted that clause hidden."
"No. I stole it because Eleanor told me the clause proved your father expected you to die young."
Eleanor.
Always Eleanor.
"Where is the document now?"
"I gave it to Claire."
"Why?"
"She said it contained a code needed to read the ledger."
Clara leaned close. "Did you ever plan to have me killed?"
Julian's face changed from defensive anger to something like wounded pride.
"No."
"Did your mother?"
He did not answer.
Clara backed away.
Agent Hale's phone rang. He listened, then looked toward the door.
"Eleanor Vale has escaped federal custody."
"How?"
"A transport vehicle was struck at an intersection. Two officers are injured."
Julian stood as far as the cuff allowed.
"She'll go to the airport."
"The airport is locked down," Hale said.
"Then she isn't going to Zurich by plane."
Clara remembered Malcolm's history as a shipping courier.
"The Vale freight terminal," she said.
Julian shook his head. "That terminal closed years ago."
"Not the old river terminal. The private cargo field outside Briarwood. My father leased it through a dormant company."
Hale stared at her. "How do you know?"
"Because I signed its annual insurance renewal yesterday."
Clara's phone buzzed with a new message from Claire.
A photograph showed Eleanor boarding a small jet.
Beside her stood Naomi Grant.
