Chapter 4 - The Woman Beside Her Father

Clara had seen thousands of photographs of her father.

Arthur Ashford at board meetings. Arthur Ashford on sailboats. Arthur Ashford holding Clara on the day she was born.

But she had never seen the woman standing beside him in Zurich.

The handwriting on the photograph looked like Adrian's.

ASK WHO YOUR MOTHER WAS.

Clara's mother, Lillian, had died when Clara was six. At least that was the story repeated so often it had hardened into fact. A car accident on a mountain road. Closed funeral. No body shown to the children because the injuries were too severe.

Adrian had been two.

Clara remembered black dresses, white flowers, and her father's hand crushing hers during the burial.

She did not remember a coffin being opened.

"This is absurd," Eleanor said from the doorway.

The police had cleared the second floor but found no intruder. A service corridor led from the study to an exterior staircase. Whoever entered knew the house.

Clara held up the photograph.

"Who is she?"

Eleanor looked at the image and laughed too loudly.

"Some banker."

"The message says to ask who my mother was."

"Then ask a ghost."

Malcolm entered behind Detective Ortiz. The moment he saw the photograph, his shoulders dropped.

"Her name was Celeste Rowan," he said.

Eleanor turned on him. "Don't."

"You have lied long enough."

Clara's mouth went dry. "Was she my mother?"

Malcolm did not answer directly.

"She worked for your father. She managed private accounts in Europe."

"Was she my mother?"

He looked at Clara with something close to pity.

"I don't know."

"You were there."

"I was a courier. Your father trusted me to move records between jurisdictions. I knew names, not relationships."

Eleanor scoffed. "He knew enough to get rich."

Malcolm's face reddened. "I never took his money."

"You took his secrets."

"To protect them from you."

The words struck harder than any accusation Clara expected.

Eleanor's eyes flashed.

"Careful, Malcolm."

"No. I'm done being careful."

He turned to Clara. "Your father discovered that someone inside Ashford Holdings was selling access to dormant accounts. Celeste helped him trace the theft to a network operating through Zurich, Rotterdam, and London. The blue ledger contained every name."

"Was Julian's name in it?"

"Julian was a child."

"Yours?"

"No."

"Eleanor's?"

Malcolm looked at his wife.

That was answer enough.

Eleanor smiled slowly. "Your father blamed everyone when his empire started cracking."

"What did you do?" Clara asked.

"I survived."

"By stealing from him?"

"By understanding that men like Arthur Ashford never create wealth without burying bodies under it."

Detective Ortiz interrupted. "Literal bodies?"

Eleanor's smile vanished.

Clara felt Naomi's hand touch her arm.

"We should move you to a secure location," the attorney said. "The intruder came for the key. They may come back for you."

Clara looked around the study.

The hidden camera. The open safe. Her brother's warning. The photograph.

For years, Julian's cruelty had been easy to categorize. Vanity. Entitlement. Infidelity. But this conspiracy was older than their marriage and perhaps older than Julian himself.

"Where is the ledger now?" Clara asked Malcolm.

"Arthur divided it."

"What does that mean?"

"He separated the pages and placed them in different archives. The brass key opens one of them."

"Which one?"

"Zurich."

Eleanor's one-way ticket suddenly made sense.

"You were going after the ledger," Clara said.

"I was going to stop a lie from destroying my family."

"Your family tried to steal twenty-eight million dollars from me."

"That transfer was never about twenty-eight million."

Clara thought of Adrian's schedule showing the money returning to her.

"Then what was it about?"

Eleanor stared at the photograph. "Eligibility."

Naomi frowned. "For what?"

"The Ashford succession clause."

Clara knew every public term of the family trust. She had never heard that phrase.

Malcolm closed his eyes.

Eleanor continued, enjoying the power of being the only person willing to speak.

"Your grandfather feared that the family line had been compromised. He created a condition. If a direct heir attempted to transfer protected assets outside approved channels, the trust would trigger a private review of bloodline, legitimacy, and beneficiary status."

Clara felt cold.

"Julian wanted the review triggered."

"Julian wanted control," Eleanor said. "He believed the review would remove you."

"Why would it remove me?"

Eleanor looked at the photograph of Celeste.

"Because Lillian Ashford may not have been your mother."

The room fell silent.

Clara's memories shifted beneath her feet.

Her father refusing to discuss the accident. The sealed medical records. The way older relatives sometimes stared at Clara before looking away.

"And Adrian?" she asked.

"Lillian gave birth to Adrian," Malcolm said. "That much is certain."

A bitter understanding formed.

If Clara were not legally recognized as Arthur Ashford's biological child, control of the trust might pass to Adrian.

"Did my brother know?"

"Not until recently," Malcolm said.

Naomi opened her tablet and began searching old trust indexes.

"There is no succession clause in the registered instruments."

"It is in the sealed charter," Malcolm replied. "The charter can only be opened with the brass key and a biometric confirmation from an Ashford heir."

Clara looked toward the broken window.

The intruder had the key.

And Adrian was missing.

"Someone needs my brother alive," she said.

"Yes," Malcolm answered. "At least until the charter is opened."

Clara's phone vibrated.

A video call from Adrian.

She answered immediately.

The screen showed darkness, then Adrian's bruised face. Blood ran from his temple. A hand held him upright.

"Clara," he whispered. "Don't go to Zurich."

A distorted voice spoke from behind the camera.

"Bring Eleanor Vale to Pier Nine before midnight, or your brother dies."

The image shifted.

May you like

Behind Adrian was a blue metal door marked with the open-eye symbol.

Then the call ended.
