Chapter 10 - The Name Erased From the Screen

Claire kept the gun trained on Eleanor.

"Who erased the result?" Clara asked.

"The system did," Claire replied. "The registry was designed to show the name only after both claimants were tested."

"Then test me."

Agent Hale stepped forward. "No one touches that system until my team secures it."

Claire shifted the gun toward him. "Your team has spent thirty years securing evidence for the people named in the ledger."

"Put down the weapon."

"Ask him about Operation Lantern," she said to Clara.

Hale's face revealed nothing, but Malcolm reacted.

"Lantern was shut down in 1994."

"It was renamed," Claire said. "Arthur traded the ledger for protection. Samuel Grant objected, so he died. Celeste objected, so she disappeared. Lillian tried to take both girls away, so the mountain road took her."

Clara felt the chamber contract around her.

"You are saying my mother's accident was murder."

"I am saying there was no accident."

Eleanor laughed weakly. "She invents a new tragedy every time she needs obedience."

Claire struck her across the face.

"You were there."

"At the mine? Yes. At Lillian's death? No."

"You delivered the altered route map."

Malcolm stared at his wife. "What route map?"

Eleanor looked away.

For the first time, Malcolm appeared to understand that his marriage contained crimes he had never imagined.

Naomi spoke from the chair. "Claire, killing Eleanor will not prove anything."

"You came willingly to help her steal the coin."

"I came to record her confession."

"And when she offered evidence clearing Richard?"

Naomi's silence answered.

Clara walked toward the biometric console.

Hale blocked her.

"Mrs. Vale, this device may contain classified intelligence."

"It contains my identity."

"It may also be compromised."

"Everything is compromised."

She stepped around him.

Claire lowered the gun slightly. "Place your palm on the glass."

Adrian grabbed Clara's wrist. "Wait. If the succession clause identifies you as ineligible, control of the trust could shift immediately."

"To you."

"I don't want it."

"That has never stopped money from destroying a family."

He flinched.

Clara placed her palm against the scanner.

A needle punctured her skin.

Data flooded the screen.

MATCHING.

The chamber fell silent except for the hum of old servers.

Then two names appeared.

SUBJECT A: CLAIRE CELESTE ROWAN

SUBJECT B: CLARA LILLIAN ASHFORD

RELATIONSHIP: MONOZYGOTIC SIBLINGS

Clara stared.

Identical twins.

Claire's gun lowered completely.

"He separated us," she whispered.

A second result loaded.

MATERNAL MATCH: CELESTE MARIE ROWAN

Clara gripped the edge of the console.

Lillian Ashford had not been her biological mother.

Celeste was.

Adrian stepped beside her. His own face had gone white.

"Then I am Lillian's son, and you are both Celeste's daughters."

Claire looked at him. "Arthur raised one daughter as legitimate and erased the other."

"Why?" Clara asked.

A video file opened automatically.

Arthur appeared on the screen, seated in the same chamber.

"Celeste gave birth to twin girls," he said. "The charter permitted only one primary heir outside my legal marriage. I made a choice no father should make and no child should forgive."

Claire's eyes filled with tears she refused to release.

"I registered Clara as Lillian's child. Claire was placed under protection after threats against Celeste. I intended to reunite them when the consortium was dismantled. I failed."

The video glitched.

Arthur continued.

"If both daughters reach this registry, equal status must be restored. The Ashford assets are to be divided, but control of the blue ledger remains with the daughter who carries Lillian's seal."

Everyone looked at Clara's wedding ring.

Julian had placed the seal on her hand without knowing its true purpose.

Or perhaps Eleanor had known.

The console requested the ring.

Clara inserted it into a narrow slot.

A hidden cabinet opened.

Inside was not the blue ledger.

It was a small reel of film, a bank key, and a letter addressed to Clara and Claire.

Claire reached for the letter.

A shot rang out.

The console shattered.

Agent Hale stood with his weapon raised.

"Nobody removes classified material from this facility."

Detective Ortiz aimed at him. "Drop it."

Hale's expression changed. The careful federal mask disappeared.

"You have no idea what that ledger contains. Governments will fall. Markets will collapse. People who had nothing to do with Arthur's crimes will die."

"So you protected murderers," Clara said.

"I protected stability."

Claire raised her pistol.

Hale fired again.

Malcolm threw himself between the weapons.

The bullet struck his chest.

He fell at Eleanor's feet.

Eleanor screamed his name.

In the chaos, the chamber lights failed.

When they returned, Hale was gone.

So were the film reel and the bank key.

The letter remained on the floor, stained with Malcolm's blood.

Clara opened it with shaking hands.
