Chapter 13 - Naomi's Confession

The flash drive contained a single video.
Naomi sat before a blank wall, wearing the gray suit she had worn the night Clara evicted the Vales. There was no timestamp and no visible window, only her controlled voice and eyes exhausted by secrets.
"Samuel Grant was my father-in-law," she began. "But Richard was not the only child he left behind. I was born Naomi Mercer. My mother worked in the Zurich consortium and had an affair with Samuel. Richard learned we shared a father only after we married. By then, we had already built a life around a lie neither of us created."
Clara paused the video.
Detective Ortiz stood beside her in the hospital security office. Adrian and Claire watched from across the table.
"She married her half brother without knowing," Adrian said.
Claire showed no surprise. "The consortium moved children between names and countries. Bloodlines were tools to them."
Clara resumed the recording.
"Samuel discovered Arthur intended to surrender a partial ledger to federal officials. He believed the deal would save Arthur while sacrificing everyone beneath him. Samuel planned to expose all of it. My mother feared he would reveal me, Richard, and the accounts supporting us. She ordered me to stop him. I was nineteen. I damaged the steering system on his boat. I told myself he would be stranded. He drowned."
Naomi closed her eyes on the screen.
"Richard spent his life believing Arthur killed our father. I let him believe it because the truth would destroy him and expose me. Years later, when Richard found pieces of the ledger, he recruited Claire. When Claire learned what Eleanor had done to Clara, she used Richard's rage to force the succession review. I helped because I believed the archive would finally prove who deserved punishment. Instead, we created new victims."
Clara thought of her unborn child.
Naomi's voice trembled.
"I gave Eleanor access to the cardiac compound, but I told her it was temporary and nonlethal. That does not excuse me. I knew she wanted Clara weakened. I knew a pregnancy made the risk greater. I chose revenge over uncertainty."
Claire stood abruptly.
"She is lying."
Clara paused the video. "Which part?"
"She says I used Richard to force the review. Richard approached me. Naomi gave him Celeste's last known address. Naomi knew about us before I did."
Ortiz looked at Claire. "Did you know about the compound?"
"No."
"Eleanor says she was told you ordered it."
"Eleanor believed whatever made her cruelty feel necessary."
"That is not proof."
Claire faced Clara. "I wanted the archive opened. I manipulated Julian. I sent the evidence that made you begin the audit. I allowed Richard to abduct Adrian because I thought fear would force him to confess the forgery. Those are my crimes. Your child is not one of them."
Clara searched her sister's face.
They shared blood, not trust.
The video continued.
Naomi revealed that Agent Hale had been the federal contact maintaining Operation Lantern. He had directed her to recover the film reel and bank key if the archive opened. In exchange, he promised immunity for Naomi and psychiatric protection for Richard.
"Hale has the reel," Naomi said. "But the key he took is a decoy. Arthur always feared the federal office more than the consortium. The real bank key is hidden inside the wedding addendum Julian stole. Claire has that document."
All eyes turned toward Claire.
Her face went still.
"Do you have it?" Clara asked.
Claire said nothing.
"Julian gave it to you."
"Years ago."
"Where is it?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"A place Hale cannot reach."
Clara stepped closer. "My father addressed the final letter to both of us. The assets are divided equally. Stop deciding what truth I am allowed to see."
Claire's jaw tightened. "You had thirty-five years with his name, his house, his protection. I had institutions, false passports, and a mother who died afraid. Do not lecture me about equality."
"I did not choose what he did to you."
"But you benefited from it."
"And I paid for crimes I did not know existed. Eleanor poisoned me. Julian used me. Adrian forged my name. Your plan placed every one of them in motion."
"Your husband was stealing before I found him."
"Then you knew exactly which weakness to feed."
The sisters stood inches apart.
Adrian moved between them.
"This is what Arthur designed," he said. "A final competition. One daughter holds the seal, one holds the document, and both believe the other is the threat."
Claire looked away first.
Ortiz received an alert. "We found Naomi's vehicle near the river. There is a body inside."
Clara's stomach dropped.
"Is it Naomi?"
"We don't know yet. The car is burning."
The last minute of the confession showed Naomi leaning toward the camera.
"Clara, Claire believes Celeste died of cancer. That is what Celeste wanted her to believe. The woman calling herself Evelyn Rowe is not Claire. Evelyn is Celeste. She is alive, and she has been controlling the succession war from the beginning."
Claire went rigid.
"No," she whispered.
The video ended.
