Chapter 14 - The Mother Who Refused to Stay Dead

Claire answered on speaker.
For several seconds, only breathing came through.
Then a woman's voice said, "Leave the hospital now. Come alone."
Claire's face had lost all color.
"You died."
"That was necessary."
"I buried you."
"You buried a body prepared for identification."
Clara felt the cruelty of the words even though they were not directed at her.
Claire gripped the phone. "Why?"
"Because Arthur's daughters could not reach the archive while Celeste Rowan remained alive. The consortium would follow me to both of you."
"You followed us instead."
"I protected you."
Clara heard Eleanor's language echoed again. Protection used as a name for control.
"Where is Naomi?" Ortiz asked.
Celeste ignored her.
"Claire, bring the marriage addendum to Saint Orison Station. Midnight. No police, or the last evidence of what Arthur did will be destroyed."
"Let me speak to her," Clara said.
Silence.
Then Celeste laughed softly.
"Clara. My fortunate daughter."
The words cut through her.
"Did you order Eleanor to poison me?"
"No."
"Did Naomi act for you?"
"Naomi acted for guilt. Eleanor acted for greed. Julian acted for vanity. I merely arranged for their choices to become visible."
"That is a careful answer."
"You sound like Arthur."
"You made Claire believe you were dead. You watched me marry a man selected by my father. You used both of us to open the archive. What do you want?"
"The ledger."
"Why?"
"Because it contains the names of the people who stole my daughters and erased my life."
"It may also contain bearer assets."
Celeste did not deny it.
"Midnight," she said. "Bring the addendum."
The call ended.
Claire walked to the window. "She held my hand while pretending to die. She made me promise not to waste my life searching for ghosts."
Clara stood beside her. "She made both of us live inside different lies."
"You still had a family."
"Did I?"
Claire looked at her then, really looked.
For the first time, the distance between their lives did not disappear, but it became visible to both of them.
The body in Naomi's burned vehicle was not Naomi.
It was Agent Hale's driver.
Naomi remained missing. Hale remained missing. Malcolm was stable after surgery. Eleanor was transferred to a high-security ward. Richard awoke and asked for his wife.
Julian negotiated limited release to federal custody in exchange for identifying Celeste's safe houses and financial routes. Clara learned about it from Ortiz, not from him.
"He wants to come to the station," Ortiz said.
"No."
"He knows Saint Orison."
"Then he can draw a map."
Saint Orison was an abandoned railway terminal beneath the old financial district. Arthur's companies had once used it to transport documents between banks without crossing public streets.
The police planned surveillance despite Celeste's warning.
Claire retrieved the marriage addendum from a deposit box registered under a false name. The parchment contained the spousal clause Julian described, but a thin metal strip was embedded in its binding.
Inside the strip was the real bank key.
Clara and Claire arrived at the station at 11:52 p.m., each wearing a concealed transmitter. The vast hall smelled of dust and wet stone. Broken clocks showed different times.
Celeste waited beneath the departure board.
She was in her late sixties, elegant despite a cane. Clara saw herself in the woman's eyes and Claire in the shape of her mouth.
No embrace came.
Celeste looked first at Claire, then Clara.
"Together," she said. "Arthur would hate that."
Claire's voice shook. "You let me mourn you."
"Mourning kept you away from the consortium."
"You could have trusted me."
"Trust killed Samuel Grant. Trust killed Lillian. Trust nearly killed all of you."
Clara held the addendum. "Where is Naomi?"
Celeste pointed toward a waiting room. Naomi sat inside, bound but alive.
"Release her."
"After the exchange."
"No."
Celeste smiled. "Arthur taught you to negotiate."
"Arthur taught me what happens when one person controls every secret."
Clara tore the parchment halfway down the center.
Celeste's composure broke.
"Stop!"
"Release Naomi."
Claire stared at Clara, then understood. The bank key was in the binding, not the text. The document itself could be sacrificed.
Celeste signaled. A man emerged and cut Naomi free.
As Naomi stumbled toward them, gunfire erupted from the upper balcony.
Police shouted.
Celeste's guards returned fire.
The station descended into chaos.
Clara pulled Naomi behind a stone column. Claire tackled Celeste as a bullet struck the departure board.
Letters and glass rained down.
A masked man seized the torn addendum from Clara's hand and ran toward the lower tunnels.
Claire fired after him and missed.
Celeste screamed, "The key!"
Clara looked down.
The metal strip had fallen from the binding.
Naomi grabbed it.
Then Julian stepped from the shadows and aimed a gun at Naomi.
"Give it to me," he said.
Clara stared at the husband who had begun this disaster with a kiss at an airport.
"You said you never wanted me dead."
"I don't."
"Then lower the gun."
"I can't. The key is the only thing keeping me alive."
A red laser sight appeared on Julian's chest from somewhere above.
May you like
Celeste whispered, "Hale."
The shot came before anyone could move.
