Chapter 11 - The Marriage Arranged in Secret

Malcolm survived the gunshot.
The bullet missed his heart but damaged a lung. As paramedics carried him from the mountain, Eleanor walked beside the stretcher in stunned silence. Her arrogance was gone. She looked like a woman who had spent her life bargaining with danger and had finally watched someone else pay the price.
Clara sat inside the medical helicopter with the bloodstained letter folded in her coat.
Claire sat opposite her.
They could have been reflections shaped by different lives.
"Did you know we were twins?" Clara asked.
"I suspected. Celeste told me I had a sister, but she never knew which child Arthur kept."
"Is she alive?"
Claire looked away. "She died nine years ago."
Clara had imagined meeting Celeste for less than an hour, and now she had lost her.
"How?"
"Cancer. She spent her final years trying to find the archive."
"Why didn't she contact me?"
"She believed Arthur's enemies watched you. She thought approaching you would get you killed."
Clara touched the wedding ring, now empty where the red seal had been removed by the console.
"She was right about the watching."
At the hospital, Naomi formally withdrew as Clara's attorney and gave a statement regarding Eleanor's escape. She insisted she had agreed to accompany Eleanor to obtain a confession and recover the red coin before it could leave the country. Clara believed parts of the story and doubted the rest.
Richard Grant remained under guard.
Agent Hale had disappeared through a maintenance passage in the mine.
The federal task force claimed he was acting alone.
No one in the room believed that.
Clara, Claire, Adrian, Detective Ortiz, and a new independent attorney gathered in a secured hospital office to read Arthur's letter.
Clara unfolded the pages.
My daughters,
If you have reached the registry together, then every safeguard I created has failed except one: you found each other.
Clara stopped. Claire stared at the floor.
The letter described Arthur's war with the consortium, his relationship with Celeste, and the decision to register Clara as Lillian's child. Then it turned to the Vales.
Years before Clara met Julian, Arthur had selected several families whose children might one day provide protection, loyalty, or a legally useful alliance. Malcolm's debt made him controllable. Julian's medical history made him dependent. Eleanor's ambition made her predictable.
Arthur did not order Clara to marry Julian.
He simply arranged their first meeting, financed Julian's education through hidden grants, and ensured he entered the same philanthropic circles.
"Our marriage was engineered," Clara said.
Adrian's face tightened. "Dad treated your life like another trust instrument."
Claire read the next paragraph aloud.
"Julian may love Clara, but love cultivated inside a cage cannot be trusted until the door is opened."
Clara laughed bitterly. "He opened it by sleeping with Sienna."
The letter revealed that Julian's wedding ring had contained a tracking filament, while Clara's held the seal. Arthur expected Eleanor to recognize the objects and guide Julian toward the Zurich archive if the succession clause was ever activated.
But Arthur had miscalculated Eleanor's greed.
She did not merely want access.
She wanted Clara removed as heir so Julian could control the assets temporarily under the spousal clause.
"Did she intend to kill you?" Claire asked.
Clara looked through the glass wall at Eleanor sitting outside Malcolm's operating room.
"Julian wouldn't answer."
Detective Ortiz entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
"We searched Eleanor's luggage from the plane. We found medication registered under Clara's name."
Inside the bag were vials of a clear liquid.
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
"A cardiac agent. In small doses, it can mimic symptoms of an inherited heart condition."
Clara remembered six months of dizziness, racing pulse, and exhaustion. Julian had urged her to rest. Eleanor had prepared herbal tea every night.
"She was poisoning me."
"We need laboratory confirmation," Ortiz said. "But the prescriptions were created using your medical identity."
Claire's face hardened. "The spousal clause required Clara to die without a child."
Clara had suffered a miscarriage eight months earlier.
The room became unbearably still.
"Test my hospital records," she said. "Test everything from the pregnancy."
Adrian turned away, already understanding.
Julian had been attentive during the miscarriage. He held Clara's hand in the emergency room. He cried when the doctor told them the child was gone.
Had those tears been real?
Or had he watched a plan succeed?
Clara demanded to speak with him.
He was transferred to a secure interview room at the hospital under armed guard. When Clara entered, he stood as if he could still greet her like a husband.
She placed the evidence photograph of the vials on the table.
"Did you know?"
Julian stared at them.
"No."
"Your mother carried poison under my name."
"I didn't know."
"Did you know she put something in my tea?"
"No."
"Did you know she wanted the spousal clause activated?"
He sat slowly.
"She said the clause was protection if your family turned against us."
"Us. You still use that word."
"Clara, I cheated. I lied about money. I helped trigger the review. But I never wanted you dead."
"Did you know about the miscarriage?"
His eyes filled with horror. "What are you asking?"
"Was it natural?"
"Yes. The doctors said it was."
"The doctors only knew what your mother put into my body."
Julian shook his head. "I swear to you."
Clara watched him carefully. For once, she believed his shock.
That did not make him innocent.
It made him a smaller villain inside a larger crime.
His phone, held as evidence on the table, suddenly lit up despite being disconnected from the network.
A video began playing.
It showed Eleanor entering Clara's bedroom with a tray of tea.
May you like
The date was the night before the miscarriage.
Behind Eleanor, barely visible in the hallway, stood Sienna.
