Chapter 4 - The Promise Beneath the Stairs

Lily covered Ethan’s mouth gently before he could gasp.
Serena moved closer to the cabinets.
Her heels struck the stone floor with slow, deliberate taps.
Conrad remained beside the staircase. Lily could see only part of him through the narrow gap between the cabinet doors: a gray suit, polished shoes and one hand holding a leather document case.
“I can hear you breathing,” Serena said.
Ethan trembled against Lily.
Serena stopped directly in front of the cabinet.
Then a telephone rang upstairs.
The sound echoed down the staircase.
Serena cursed and looked toward Conrad.
“That will be Victor.”
“You told him the child was asleep.”
“He must have heard something.”
Conrad checked his watch.
“You have less than an hour before the medical transport arrives.”
Serena stared at the cabinet another moment before walking away.
“Lock the upper door,” she said. “If they are down here, they can stay until we’re ready.”
The staircase door closed.
A lock turned above them.
Lily waited until the footsteps faded.
Then she opened the cabinet.
Ethan was crying silently.
“We’re trapped,” he whispered.
“No, sweetheart.”
Lily searched the basement.
There were no windows. The only visible exit was the locked staircase door. Her phone showed no signal beneath the thick stone walls.
She looked at the red room.
Celeste had not created a chamber with only one way out. She had been too careful for that.
Lily inserted the key again and opened the door.
A red emergency light flickered on automatically.
The room beyond was small and windowless. Shelves covered every wall. Boxes, photographs, ledgers and sealed envelopes had been arranged with obsessive precision.
A camera stood on a tripod facing a wooden chair.
On the far wall was a large portrait of Celeste and Victor on their wedding day.
Someone had cut Victor’s face from the photograph.
Ethan pointed toward a desk.
“Mommy.”
A tablet rested on the surface beneath a layer of dust.
Lily pressed the power button.
The screen came alive.
A video file waited in the center.
Its title read:
FOR THE DAY SERENA ENTERS THIS HOUSE
Lily stared at the words.
Celeste had recorded the file before Serena publicly met Victor.
Before the car crash.
Before Ethan was born.
Lily touched the screen.
Celeste appeared in the video, seated in the wooden chair. She wore a white blouse and looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, Serena Vale has found a way into Victor’s life.”
Lily stopped breathing.
Ethan stepped closer to the tablet.
His mother continued.
“Serena is not interested in Victor’s money. Money is only a tool. She wants the controlling vote attached to the Hale Legacy Trust.”
Lily lowered herself into the desk chair.
“Years ago, Serena worked with Conrad Vale to create false identities for private clients. I discovered that several of those identities were used to transfer foundation properties. When I confronted them, they threatened my family.”
Celeste looked away from the camera, as though listening for someone beyond the room.
“The trust contains a protection clause. If Victor’s direct heir is removed from his custody before activation, temporary control passes to his legal spouse. They may try to use that clause.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
His eyes remained fixed on the image of his mother.
Celeste leaned closer to the camera.
“But Serena is not working alone.”
The tablet suddenly displayed a low-battery warning.
Lily connected it to a charger on the desk, but the electricity had been disconnected.
Celeste’s image flickered.
“The person inside the Hale family who hired her is…”
The screen went black.
“No,” Lily whispered.
Ethan touched the tablet.
“Mommy went away again.”
Lily looked around the room.
There had to be another copy.
She began opening drawers.
Inside the lowest one, she found a silver phone, an old passport bearing Serena’s photograph under a different name, and a stack of medical transport forms.
The patient name on the first form was Ethan Hale.
The destination was Northbridge Behavioral Center.
The listed reason for transfer was violent instability.
The authorizing guardian signature belonged to Victor.
It was a forgery.
Lily photographed every page with her phone.
Then she heard a scrape behind the portrait.
A thin line of daylight appeared along the wall.
Ethan had pressed a hidden switch.
The portrait swung open.
Behind it was a narrow passage leading upward.
Lily gathered the documents and took Ethan’s hand.
Before entering the passage, she looked back at the dark tablet.
Celeste had left them evidence.
May you like
But she had also left a warning.
Serena was not the person at the top of the conspiracy.
