Chapter 13 - The Hearing Before Noon
The emergency hearing began at eleven the next morning.
Serena sat beside Conrad at one table. Victor sat opposite them with Elena Ward, his independent attorney. Lily waited behind him while Ethan remained in a protected room with a child specialist.
Elias had been detained, but his attorneys claimed the hidden floor belonged to an unauthorized group within the foundation. They argued that he had entered the room only to investigate suspicious activity.
The copied files told a different story.
Elena presented the recordings first.
Serena’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Victor’s child must disappear before the trust activates.”
Conrad objected, claiming the audio had been manipulated.
Elena submitted the server records, device data and Serena’s earpiece connection history.
The judge listened without expression.
Then Elena produced the Northbridge transfer order.
“This document bears Victor Hale’s forged signature. It was created six days before the alleged emergency.”
Conrad leaned toward Serena.
She pulled away from him.
Elena continued.
“The transport destination was controlled by Elias Wren, whose private boardroom contained surveillance footage of Ethan Hale and a prepared announcement of the child’s death.”
A murmur spread through the courtroom.
Serena stood suddenly.
“I didn’t know about that.”
Conrad grabbed her arm.
She tore free.
“I was told they would keep Ethan at Northbridge for one night.”
The judge ordered her to sit.
Serena began to cry.
“Conrad told me the trust was stolen from my family. He said Celeste had forged the amendment.”
Conrad stared at her.
“You should stop talking.”
“No,” Serena said. “You said Victor would lose temporary control. You said no one would hurt Ethan.”
“You are confused.”
Serena laughed bitterly.
“You promised me I would become trustee.”
Elena looked toward the judge.
“My client requests that Serena be allowed to continue.”
For the next twenty minutes, Serena described the plan.
She had entered Victor’s life under Elias’s direction. Conrad had introduced them at a charity dinner. Her false identity had been carefully supported by years of fabricated records.
She admitted isolating Ethan.
She admitted staging evidence against Lily.
She admitted contacting Northbridge.
But she denied knowing that Celeste’s death announcement had once been prepared using the same system.
Victor listened without interrupting.
When Serena finished, she looked at him.
“I did love you.”
Victor’s expression did not change.
“You loved the version of me you could control.”
“I never wanted Ethan dead.”
“You wanted him frightened, removed and silenced.”
“I thought he would come home.”
“He was already home.”
Serena lowered her eyes.
Conrad requested a recess.
Before the judge could answer, a court officer entered and handed Elena a sealed envelope.
It had been delivered by Adrian Hale.
Inside was the original trust amendment signed by Celeste, Victor’s father and two independent witnesses.
Attached was a handwritten statement.
Elias ordered Serena’s placement inside the family. Conrad created her identity. I was imprisoned after I discovered the plan. Celeste tried to expose them and paid for it.
The judge denied Serena’s petition.
Ethan would remain with Victor.
The trust activated immediately under its emergency protection clause.
Conrad was detained for questioning regarding forgery, conspiracy and unlawful confinement.
Serena was escorted toward a separate door.
As she passed Lily, she stopped.
“You think you saved him.”
Lily looked directly at her.
“I did what you refused to do.”
“What?”
“I treated him like a child instead of a key.”
Serena’s face hardened.
“You still don’t know who gave Elias his orders.”
Lily remembered Celeste’s unfinished video.
Serena leaned closer.
“The real chairman was never on floor thirty-one.”
Officers pulled her away.
At twelve noon, Ethan’s trust became permanent.

But Victor knew Serena’s final warning was not a lie.
