A metal horse beneath a staircase.
Noah confirmed each memory.
Victor questioned him gently.
“Did you tell Ethan these things?”
“No.”
“Did August ever connect you to a machine?”
Noah looked toward the floor.
“Sometimes he made me sleep beside another child.”
“What child?”
“I never saw his face.”
Mara searched the Orchard medical files.
She found references to Project Echo.
The program attempted memory conditioning through repeated audio, video and chemical suggestion.
Children were not given another person’s memories.
They were trained to believe recorded experiences belonged to them.
Daniel had taken Ethan’s sample to create a biological access profile.
He might also have sent the red sweater to trigger conditioned material planted years earlier.
“But Ethan was never at Northbridge,” Victor said.
Celeste whispered, “Before birth.”
Mara understood.
The hospital had exposed Celeste to Project Echo during pregnancy. Sounds, repeated phrases and stress responses may have affected what Ethan later recognized.
Noah shook his head.
“He knows the metal horse.”
Ethan drew it.
Beneath the horse was a door.
Mara compared the picture with old Northbridge plans.
No such room appeared.
Then Noah added one detail.
“The horse only moves when two children sit on it.”
Victor looked at both boys.
August had always built systems requiring paired identities.
They returned to the abandoned Northbridge facility.
The metal horse stood in an outdoor courtyard beneath weeds.
Ethan and Noah sat on opposite sides.
The horse lowered.
Stone moved beneath it.
A staircase appeared.
At the bottom, a television switched on.
Daniel Wren appeared on the screen.
