Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath the Seal

The shelf moved inward.

Cold air rose from a stone staircase descending beneath the red room.

Victor told Ethan to remain with Lily, but the child refused to release his father’s hand.

“Mommy made it for me,” Ethan said.

Victor looked at Lily.

She took Ethan’s other hand.

“We go together.”

The staircase ended at an underground chamber far older than the mansion above it. The walls were made of rough stone. Metal cabinets stood in long rows beneath dim emergency lights.

At the center waited a table.

A sealed envelope rested on it beneath a glass cover.

Victor recognized Celeste’s handwriting.

TO VICTOR, LILY AND ETHAN

Lily lifted the cover.

Victor opened the envelope.

The first page contained a list of foundation properties transferred through false identities over the previous twenty-five years. Some had become hospitals, schools and shelters.

Others did not officially exist.

Beneath the list was a map showing tunnels connecting several properties across the city.

Northbridge was one of them.

The Hale mansion was another.

Adrian studied the map.

“Our father built this network.”

Victor turned to him.

“For what?”

“I never knew.”

A second page contained photographs of children with identification numbers rather than names.

Lily covered Ethan’s eyes before he could see them clearly.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the final photograph.

The foundation did not rescue them. It renamed them.

Victor’s stomach tightened.

Celeste had been investigating something larger than stolen property or trust control.

The third page carried a single name.

Chairman August Hale.

Victor stared at it.

“That was my father.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Our father’s name was Thomas.”

“The public records say August Thomas Hale.”

“No,” Adrian whispered. “August Hale was our grandfather. He died before we were born.”

Victor looked at the old photograph on the page.

The man identified as August Hale had the same eyes as Victor’s father.

But the date beneath the photograph was recent.

Only six months earlier.

Lily stepped closer.

“That’s impossible.”

A telephone rang inside the chamber.

The sound came from a black device mounted on the wall.

No one moved.

It rang again.

Victor picked up the receiver.

A man spoke.

“You found Celeste’s archive.”

The voice was not distorted.

Victor recognized it.

He had heard it every day of his childhood.

He tightened his grip on the phone.

“My father is dead.”

The man laughed softly.

“Thomas is dead.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Who are you?”

“You already read my name.”

Victor’s eyes returned to the photograph.

August Hale.

The original chairman.

The man who should have been dead for more than forty years.

“What do you want?”

“The same thing I wanted before Celeste interfered.”

“You ordered Serena to take Ethan.”

“Serena was never supposed to touch the child. Elias changed the plan because he feared exposure.”

“Where are you?”

“Closer than your security systems can detect.”

A metallic sound echoed from somewhere beyond the chamber wall.

A lock opening.

Lily pulled Ethan behind her.

Adrian searched the rows of cabinets.

Victor lowered his voice.

“You lost. The trust is active. Serena and Conrad are exposed. Elias is in custody.”

“Those were temporary pieces.”

“You cannot control Ethan.”

“I do not need to control him.”

The man paused.

“I need him to open what Celeste sealed.”

Ethan looked toward the far wall.

A silver fox symbol had begun to glow beneath the stone.

The child reached into the pocket of his yellow dress.

Lily stared at him.

He pulled out a second gold key.

“Ethan,” Victor said, “where did you get that?”

“Mommy put two keys in the dress.”

The glowing fox split down the center.

A hidden door slowly opened.

Beyond it stood a woman in a white coat.

She had Celeste’s face.

Victor could not breathe.

The woman looked at Ethan and began to cry.

“You grew so much,” she whispered.

Ethan took one step forward.

“Mommy?”

Victor moved in front of his son.

The telephone remained against his ear.

August Hale spoke one final sentence.

“Before you embrace her, Victor, ask which Celeste came home from the hospital three years ago.”

May you like

The underground lights went out.

And in the darkness, someone took Ethan’s hand.
