The foundation remained intact.
Investigators reopened Celeste’s underground chamber and found the registry cabinets empty.
Every physical file had been removed through a tunnel.
Noah knew where they had gone.
“Grandfather has a room under the room.”
Mara examined the glowing map.
“The Orchard Core.”
“What is inside?” Victor asked.
“Original birth records. Genetic samples. Replacement plans.”
“And August?”
Noah answered.
“He sleeps there.”
Adrian looked at the boy.
“What does that mean?”
Noah pointed to the recent photograph of August Hale.
“That is his real face.”
Mara shook her head.
“He would be over ninety.”
“He changes his blood.”
The registry explained the rest.
Orchard had begun as an illegal medical program. Wealthy patrons funded experimental transfusions, tissue grafts and identity replacement.
August was not immortal.
He had prolonged his life using biological material taken from descendants selected through the chairman line.
Victor understood why his birth record mattered.
He had not merely been placed with Thomas.
He had been raised as a future donor.
Ethan and Noah were the next generation.
Celeste typed a message on her tablet.
THE SECOND KEY DOES NOT OPEN THE CORE.
Mara read it.
“What does it open?”
Celeste looked at her sons.
Then she wrote:
THE DESTRUCTION SYSTEM.
Ethan entered with Lily.
Victor had told them to remain outside, but the archive door had opened when Ethan approached.
Noah saw him.
The two brothers faced one another for the first time.
Ethan smiled uncertainly.
“Are you Noah?”
Noah did not answer.
Ethan held out the gold key.
“I think this is yours too.”
The floor beneath them moved.
A circular platform began descending.
Victor grabbed both children.
Above them, the archive doors sealed.
