THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 15 / 16

Chapter 15 - the door no one knew existed)

The alarm came from beneath the house.

Graham grabbed Noah.

Jonah drew his pistol.

Security screens throughout the office changed automatically.

One camera after another went black.

East hallway.

Library.

Wine cellar.

Garage.

Garden gate.

Then the final image froze.

A man stood beside the old carriage building at the northern edge of the property.

Long dark coat.

Gray hair.

Face turned partly toward the camera.

Alexander Price.

Graham stared.

"He is here."

Jonah spoke into his radio.

"Lock every exterior door. No one enters or leaves."

Security responded.

Then another voice came through.

"North gate compromised."

A second guard shouted.

"Power failure in the carriage building."

Jonah turned to Graham.

"Take Noah to the safe room."

Noah resisted.

"No."

"Graham."

"I know."

He lifted Noah into his arms.

Noah held the silver recorder against his chest.

They ran through the west corridor.

The mansion went dark.

Emergency lights switched on.

Red illumination filled the hallway.

Noah whispered, "Dad."

"I'm here."

"The knocking."

Graham stopped.

Three knocks came from beneath the floor.

Pause.

Two more.

Jonah heard it too.

"That's not Alexander."

Graham looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because it's coming from below us."

They followed the sound to Laura's music room.

The piano stood untouched.

The portrait above the fireplace had tilted slightly.

Graham approached.

Behind the portrait was a metal plate.

Noah pointed.

"That wasn't there before."

Jonah examined it.

A tiny slot ran along one side.

"Key card."

Graham remembered Laura's flash drive.

He inserted it.

The plate clicked.

Part of the floor beside the fireplace shifted.

Noah stared.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Not one of the known passages.

Something deeper.

Graham looked at Jonah.

"The Meridian Ledger."

"Maybe."

The alarm continued.

Security reported movement near the north cellar.

Alexander was inside the house.

Jonah looked toward Noah.

"Safe room. Now."

Noah shook his head.

"My mom might be down there."

Graham's chest tightened.

"Why would you think that?"

"The recorder."

Noah held up the silver device.

"When she spoke, I heard the same sound."

"What sound?"

He replayed the file.

Behind Laura's voice was a low mechanical hum.

Noah pointed toward the open staircase.

The same hum drifted upward.

Graham felt every hair on his arms rise.

Laura had recorded that message somewhere connected to Vale House.

Maybe beneath it.

Jonah called for officers.

No response.

Their radios filled with static.

Someone had blocked communications.

Graham switched on his phone flashlight.

The hidden stairs descended farther than expected.

Stone walls replaced plaster.

The air became colder.

At the bottom they found a narrow tunnel.

On one side was an old steel door.

On the other, a modern biometric scanner glowed green.

Noah suddenly stopped.

"What?"

"I've seen this."

"Where?"

"In the blue room."

Graham looked at him.

"There was a picture on Helen's desk. I didn't understand it."

Jonah moved toward the scanner.

"Don't touch anything."

The steel door opened by itself.

All three men froze.

Light appeared inside.

A long underground chamber stretched beneath the mansion.

Shelves of documents lined the walls.

Computer servers blinked quietly.

At the center stood a table.

On the table sat a leather-bound book.

The cover contained one word.

MERIDIAN.

Graham stared.

After years of secrecy, the thing Laura had tried to protect was directly in front of him.

Then Noah whispered:

"Dad."

At the far end of the chamber was another door.

Someone had written a message across it in black marker.

GRAHAM, DO NOT TRUST JONAH.

Graham turned slowly.

Jonah looked at the words.

Then at Graham.

"I didn't write that."

Noah stepped closer to his father.

A phone began ringing.

Not Graham's.

Not Jonah's.

The sound came from the table.

Beside the Meridian Ledger lay an old white telephone.

It rang again.

Graham approached.

Jonah said, "Don't."

Graham lifted the receiver.

For a moment there was only breathing.

Then a woman whispered:

"Graham?"

His knees nearly failed.

"Laura?"

Noah covered his mouth.

Graham gripped the phone.

"Laura, where are you?"

Her breathing became unsteady.

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"You have to listen to me."

"Tell me where you are."

"You found the ledger."

Graham stared at the leather book.

"Yes."

"Then Alexander will come for Noah."

"He's already here."

Silence.

Laura whispered something Graham could barely hear.

"Oh God."

"Laura."

"Graham, Jonah cannot see the final page."

Graham looked at his friend.

Jonah stood ten feet away.

His expression had changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Why?"

Laura began crying.

"Because Jonah Reed isn't his real name."

The underground lights switched off.

Noah screamed.

A gunshot exploded somewhere in the tunnel behind them.

Graham dropped the phone and pulled Noah to the floor.

Jonah disappeared into the darkness.

Footsteps rushed toward the chamber.

Graham reached for the Meridian Ledger.

His fingers found the leather cover.

Another gunshot.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

The tunnel was empty.

Jonah was gone.

The steel door stood open.

On the floor where he had been standing lay his pistol.

And beside it was a photograph Graham had never seen before.

Graham picked it up.

Four young men stood outside Vale House nearly twenty years earlier.

One was Alexander Price.

One was Graham's father.

One was Malcolm Rusk.

And the fourth man was unmistakably Jonah.

Except the handwritten name beneath his photograph did not say Jonah Reed.

It said:

Nathaniel Price.

Noah looked at his father.

"Who is Nathaniel?"

Before Graham could answer, the white telephone rang again.

This time Noah reached it first.

He lifted the receiver.

Graham shouted his name.

Too late.

Noah listened.

His face slowly lost all color.

Then he looked at his father and whispered:

"Dad...

Mom says Jonah is her brother."

The lights went out again.

And from somewhere behind the sealed door came three slow knocks.

May you like

Pause.

Two more.
