THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 10 / 16

Chapter 10 - the boy between the wooden beams)

Everything after that happened too quickly and too slowly.

Graham tore at the wall.

Jonah ordered the corridor cleared.

Police officers pushed guests back.

Marianne stood several feet away with both hands over her mouth.

Helen remained near the staircase.

She did not run.

That surprised Jonah.

People expected guilty people to run.

The intelligent ones often stayed.

They performed innocence.

Graham pulled away a large piece of plaster.

Noah became fully visible between two wooden studs.

His face was gray with exhaustion.

Peter Shaw lay behind him.

"Peter!"

One officer called for medical teams.

Graham reached through.

"Are you okay?"

Noah looked down.

He was holding the recorder.

For a second Graham did not recognize it.

Then he remembered Laura's desk.

Noah extended it.

"Take it."

Graham wrapped his fingers around the device.

Their hands touched.

Noah began crying.

Graham's control shattered.

"I'm getting you out."

Police used saws to cut through a wooden stud.

Another officer entered the passage through the hidden panel discovered earlier.

Within minutes they unlocked the internal door.

Graham crawled through the opening.

Noah fell into his arms.

Graham held him so tightly the boy made a small sound.

"I'm sorry."

Graham kissed his hair.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For not hearing you."

Noah pressed his face against his father's shoulder.

"You came."

Behind them medics reached Peter.

He was conscious but weak.

Caleb Dunn was nowhere in the corridor.

Helen walked forward.

"Thank God."

Jonah stepped between her and Graham.

Helen looked offended.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving them space."

"I'm Noah's godmother."

"Then give them space."

Helen stared at him.

A medic carried Noah toward the hallway.

Noah saw Helen.

His body stiffened.

Graham noticed.

"Noah?"

The boy whispered, "Don't let her touch me."

Graham looked at Helen.

Her face remained calm.

But Marianne heard him too.

Helen stopped.

"He's traumatized."

Noah clutched Graham.

"She put me there."

Every person nearby became silent.

Helen smiled sadly.

"Noah, I know you're frightened."

"You put Peter there too."

Helen looked at the officers.

"This is absurd."

Jonah said, "Then you won't mind staying."

"I have no intention of leaving."

That was when a woman from the foundation board approached wearing a blue evening gown.

For one second Graham thought Noah had been talking about her.

Then he realized there were two women in blue in the corridor.

The confusion distracted everyone.

Helen moved toward the staircase.

Not quickly.

Just enough.

Jonah saw her hand reach into her purse.

He followed.

Helen walked past a marble console table.

Her hand came out holding a phone.

Jonah grabbed her wrist.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling my attorney."

"Unlock it."

"No."

Police approached.

Jonah looked at the screen.

A message had already been sent.

Only three words.

Burn the clinic.

Helen's face changed.

The performance ended.

She shoved Jonah.

He caught her.

Police seized the phone.

Helen shouted for her attorney.

Across the hallway, Graham barely noticed.

His son was alive.

For that moment, it was enough.

At the hospital, doctors treated dehydration, bruising, mild hypothermia, and a concussion.

Peter was admitted separately.

Graham refused to leave Noah's side.

Marianne waited outside the room.

Noah asked about her once.

"Is Marianne bad?"

Graham did not know how to answer.

"She made mistakes."

"Did she put me in the wall?"

"No."

"Did she know?"

"Not until later."

Noah considered that.

Then he asked about the recorder.

Graham held it up.

"I have it."

Noah's expression became serious.

"Don't lose it."

"I won't."

"Mom is on it."

Graham's hand stopped.

"What?"

May you like

Noah's eyes closed.

"I think Mom is alive."
