THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 13 / 16

Chapter 13 - the house beneath the house)

Police raided the Vermont address before sunrise.

The clinic was empty.

Someone had cleaned it recently.

Mattresses removed.

Computers destroyed.

Medical cabinets burned.

But not everything was gone.

Investigators discovered Laura Vale's fingerprints on a bathroom mirror.

They also found blood beneath a baseboard.

DNA testing confirmed it belonged to her.

The blood was approximately three years old.

No evidence proved Laura had died there.

That mattered.

Graham chose hope.

Back at Vale House, investigators searched every hidden corridor.

The mansion became a construction site.

Walls were opened.

Floors lifted.

Old rooms exposed.

Noah watched from a safe distance.

He had returned home after six days in the hospital.

Graham offered to move them into a hotel.

Noah refused.

"If we leave, the bad people get the house."

So they stayed.

Marianne moved out.

Not because Graham ordered her to.

Because she understood that trust could not be repaired while she remained under the same roof.

Before leaving, she spoke with Noah.

"I should have told your dad the truth."

Noah nodded.

"I was scared."

"So was I."

Marianne cried.

Noah surprised her by hugging her.

"I don't hate you."

She held him carefully.

"Your father might."

"He doesn't hate people for long."

Marianne laughed through tears.

"You don't know your father as well as you think."

Noah smiled.

"I know him better than you do."

Graham watched from the doorway.

After Marianne left, Noah asked if she would come back.

"I don't know."

"Do you love her?"

Graham looked toward the empty driveway.

"I don't know that either."

Noah considered this.

"Adults don't know much."

"No."

Graham almost smiled.

"No, we really don't."

The search beneath the mansion revealed one final chamber.

It lay underneath the old wine cellar.

There was no door on any blueprint.

Inside stood a steel cabinet.

The key was found in Helen's office.

Graham, Jonah, and police opened it together.

The cabinet contained financial records going back thirty years.

Photographs.

Passports.

Copies of medical files.

And a sealed envelope marked L.V.

Inside was a flash drive.

The files were encrypted.

Jonah's technicians began working.

Graham studied the paper records.

One document showed payments from Charles Vale to Eleanor Price.

Another identified Eleanor's son.

Alexander Price.

The birth certificate listed no father.

But a handwritten note had been clipped to it.

Charles's boy.

Graham stared at the photograph attached to a later record.

Alexander at age thirty.

Dark hair.

Sharp jaw.

He looked nothing like Graham.

Except for the eyes.

The Vale eyes.

Graham sat down.

"My brother."

"Half brother," Jonah said.

"You knew?"

"No."

"Helen said you met him."

Jonah's face hardened.

"I met someone named Alex Price fifteen years ago."

Graham looked at him.

"Where?"

"When I was a detective."

Jonah explained.

A confidential informant had introduced him to Alexander during an investigation involving financial crimes.

Alexander gave police evidence against several executives.

Then disappeared.

Jonah never knew his connection to the Vale family.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because until ten minutes ago, I didn't know it mattered."

Graham wanted to believe him.

After everything, belief had become difficult.

That evening the technicians partially decrypted Laura's flash drive.

Most files remained locked.

One video opened.

Laura appeared on screen.

Alive.

Sitting in her music room.

The timestamp was two days before her supposed death.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Graham, if you are seeing this, then I failed to stop something that began before either of us were born."

Graham stopped the video.

He could not breathe.

Noah entered the room.

He saw his mother's face frozen on the screen.

"Dad?"

Graham turned.

Noah walked closer.

"Play it."

Graham hesitated.

Noah took his hand.

Together, father and son listened.

Laura continued.

"Your father left behind more than money. He left a debt. Alexander believes the Vale family owes him everything. The house. The company. The foundation. Even Noah's inheritance."

Laura looked off camera.

Then back.

"But money is not what frightens me."

She lowered her voice.

"Alexander is searching for something Charles hid beneath Vale House. I do not know what it is. I only know Charles called it the Meridian Ledger."

The video glitched.

Then ended.

Noah looked at Graham.

"What's the Meridian Ledger?"

Graham stared toward the walls.

"I don't know."

From the doorway, Jonah said quietly:

"But I think Helen does."
