THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 11 / 16

Chapter 11 - thirty-seven files)

Jonah copied the recorder before anyone listened to it.

Three copies.

One went to police.

One to a private forensic laboratory.

One into a safe only Graham and Jonah could access.

The original remained with Graham.

There were thirty-seven files.

The first was Laura joking about dinosaurs.

The second was Noah recording the knocking.

The third captured the voices behind the blue door.

Files four through seventeen documented Noah's exploration and disappearance.

Then came Peter.

Caleb.

Helen.

Marianne.

And the unknown man.

The recordings transformed the case.

Helen could no longer dismiss Noah's accusation as confusion.

Her voice was clear.

In file twenty-four she ordered Caleb to move Noah.

In file twenty-nine she discussed killing Peter.

In file thirty-one she mentioned Laura refusing to cooperate.

Police arrested Helen before midnight.

She requested counsel and stopped speaking.

Caleb Dunn was located the next morning at a motel forty miles away.

He had not escaped alone.

His ten-year-old son was with him.

Caleb surrendered without resistance.

During interrogation, he admitted helping Helen maintain the hidden passages.

He admitted planting Noah's phone near the garden gate.

He admitted driving the dark SUV seen on security footage.

But he denied knowing where Laura was.

"Who was giving Helen orders?" Jonah asked.

Caleb shook his head.

"I never met him."

"You heard him."

"Sometimes."

"Name?"

"No."

"What did Helen call him?"

Caleb looked toward the observation mirror.

"Mr. Vale."

Jonah thought he had misheard.

"Graham?"

"No."

"Charles Vale is dead."

"I know."

"Then who?"

Caleb whispered, "That's all I heard."

When Graham learned about the name, he became silent.

His father, Charles Vale, had been dead seven years.

Graham had no brothers.

No uncles who used the name.

There should have been no other Mr. Vale.

Unless Caleb was lying.

Or unless someone else had been using the family name.

Peter recovered enough to speak.

He confirmed most of Caleb's story.

But he added something Caleb had omitted.

Several years earlier, before Laura's death, Peter had seen a man use the hidden corridors.

The man had never shown his face.

He entered from an underground service tunnel connecting Vale House to an old carriage building near the property line.

"Height?" Jonah asked.

"About Graham's."

"Age?"

"I don't know."

"Voice?"

"Low. Educated."

"Did Laura know him?"

Peter stared at Graham.

"I think she did."

"Why?"

"Because I heard her arguing with him once."

Graham leaned forward.

"What did she say?"

Peter swallowed.

"She said, 'You don't get to call yourself family after what you did.'"

Graham felt cold.

Jonah asked, "And what did he say?"

Peter looked down.

"He told her she should have died with her mother."

Graham stood so abruptly his chair fell.

Laura's mother had died when Laura was sixteen.

A supposed overdose.

Laura rarely discussed it.

Graham had always believed the death was a painful family tragedy unrelated to the Vales.

Now he was no longer certain.

The forensic laboratory recovered deleted material from Noah's recorder.

File thirty-eight.

It had been erased months earlier.

The date was impossible.

Eleven months after Laura's funeral.

The recording lasted twenty-three seconds.

At first there was static.

Then breathing.

Then a woman's voice.

Graham listened once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Jonah watched him.

"Is it her?"

Graham could barely speak.

"Yes."

Laura's voice said:

"If Graham ever finds this, tell him I did not leave him. Tell Noah I tried to come home. And tell them both that Helen is not the one they should fear."

A man's voice entered in the background.

Laura immediately stopped speaking.

The file ended.

Graham sat motionless.

May you like

His wife had been alive eleven months after he buried her.

And if the date was genuine, someone had recorded her recently enough that she might still be alive now.
