THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 14 / 16

Chapter 14 - the debt Charles Vale left behind)

The Meridian Ledger was not a financial ledger.

At least not an ordinary one.

Helen finally explained after prosecutors offered to consider her cooperation.

Charles Vale had spent decades building political and financial influence through private agreements.

Favors.

Hidden investments.

Secret ownership structures.

Payments that never appeared in official books.

The Meridian Ledger supposedly documented all of it.

Judges.

Executives.

Politicians.

Private companies.

Offshore accounts.

People who had become powerful because Charles Vale helped them.

And people Charles could destroy because he knew their secrets.

Alexander believed the ledger was his inheritance.

Laura believed it was evidence.

Charles had hidden it before his death.

No one knew where.

"Alexander thinks Laura found it," Helen said.

"Did she?" Graham asked.

"I don't know."

"Did my father ever mention it to you?"

"No."

"Then why Meridian?"

"Charles used stars as names for confidential accounts. Meridian was the most protected."

Jonah asked, "Could it still be in the mansion?"

Helen smiled weakly.

"Why do you think Alexander kept tunnels open?"

Investigators searched for another week.

Nothing.

Meanwhile, the case against Helen became public.

News networks surrounded the estate.

Foundation donors demanded resignations.

The Vale Foundation board dissolved its executive committee.

Graham froze all accounts linked to suspicious transfers.

Several arrests followed.

Caleb accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.

Peter Shaw reunited with his family.

Marianne publicly admitted she had been paid to approach Graham and accepted responsibility for her deception.

She did not name Noah or reveal details that could hurt him.

Graham noticed that.

He did not forgive her.

But he noticed.

The primary mystery surrounding Noah's disappearance had an answer.

Helen ordered the kidnapping.

Caleb carried it out.

Peter was imprisoned because he knew too much.

The SUV footage had been staged.

Noah had been kept inside Vale House.

The truth was ugly.

But it was truth.

For Noah, that was enough to begin sleeping again.

For Graham, it was not.

Laura remained missing.

Alexander remained free.

The Meridian Ledger remained hidden.

Then, three weeks after Noah's rescue, Jonah received a call from federal investigators.

A man matching Alexander Price's description had been seen crossing into Canada under a false identity.

Security footage showed him clearly enough for facial comparison.

Graham stood beside Jonah as the image appeared.

Older now.

Gray in his hair.

A scar near his right eye.

But unmistakably the man from the photograph.

Alexander was alive.

And running.

"Can they stop him?" Graham asked.

"They're trying."

Noah entered the office carrying the black recorder.

Graham frowned.

"I thought that was locked away."

"This isn't the same one."

The room became silent.

Noah held up a second device.

Smaller.

Silver.

"Where did you get that?"

"From my jacket."

Graham stared.

"What jacket?"

"The black one I wore inside the wall. The hospital put it in a bag because it was ripped."

Jonah walked closer.

"Where was the recorder?"

"Inside the lining."

Graham took it carefully.

"Was it yours?"

Noah shook his head.

"Peter didn't put it there either."

"How do you know?"

"I asked him."

Jonah examined the device.

No brand.

No serial number.

Only one audio file.

Graham felt dread rising again.

"When was this recorded?"

Jonah connected it to a laptop.

The metadata appeared.

Seven days after Noah's rescue.

Impossible.

The jacket had been sealed inside an evidence bag during that time.

Noah whispered, "Play it."

Graham pressed the button.

Static.

Then footsteps.

A door closing.

A woman breathing.

Graham recognized the breathing before the voice even began.

Laura.

"Graham."

Noah grabbed his father's arm.

Laura continued.

"If you found Noah, then Helen failed."

Graham's eyes filled with tears.

"If Noah is safe, listen carefully. Alexander is not leaving the country."

Jonah leaned closer.

Laura's voice became quieter.

"He wants you to believe he is running."

A sound occurred in the background.

Three knocks.

Pause.

Two knocks.

Noah went pale.

Laura whispered:

"He is coming back to Vale House."

The recording ended.

For several seconds no one moved.

Then the mansion security alarm began to scream.
