Chapter 7: The Truth in the Hospital Room

Dr. Wells confronted Victoria in a private room.
On the table were Maria’s letter, old accident records, and photos of the silver bracelet.
“Why was your name connected to Laura’s driver before the crash?” Dr. Wells asked.
Victoria’s face tightened.
“I don’t remember.”
“Why were the emergency records changed?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel looked straight at her.
“You knew Emma was Lily.”
Victoria’s silence answered for her.
“You saw a sick child,” Daniel said, “and instead of saving her, you thought about inheritance.”
Victoria had no answer.
For the first time, her expensive clothes and cold smile could not protect her.
That night, Emma’s procedure lasted for hours.
Daniel waited until his legs were numb and his eyes burned. Close to midnight, Dr. Wells came out.
“She is past the dangerous stage,” he said. “The procedure was successful.”
Daniel covered his face and cried quietly.
When he entered the recovery room, Emma was awake.
“Daddy,” she whispered. “Are you crying?”
Daniel wiped his face quickly.
“No. The hospital is dusty.”
Emma smiled weakly.
“But hospitals are clean.”
“Then maybe my eyes are broken.”
Emma looked at him for a moment.
“I dreamed about Mom,” she whispered. “She said you shouldn’t be afraid. She said I know the way home.”

Daniel kissed her hand.
“Yes,” he said. “You always do.”
