Chapter 5: The Secret Guardian

Daniel ran to the cardiology floor.

Doctors were moving Emma to intensive care. Her face was pale, and machines beeped around her.

“Daddy’s here!” Daniel called.

But Emma did not open her eyes.

For two hours, Daniel waited outside the treatment area. When a doctor finally came out, his expression was serious.

“She is stable for now,” the doctor said. “But the procedure must happen sooner than expected.”

“Then do it,” Daniel said immediately.

The doctor lowered his eyes.

Daniel already knew the answer.

Money.

Again, money.

That was why Daniel found himself at the cashier counter again, placing his last few dollars in front of strangers who looked at his daughter like an unpaid invoice.

Victoria appeared beside him, smiling.

“Do you really think love can pay a hospital bill?” she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“No,” he said. “But a hospital should not need a father to be rich before it saves his child.”

The finance manager refused him anyway.

Then the cashier tore the bill.

Then Daniel found the secret line.

Then Dr. Wells appeared.

Now, sitting in the hallway after Emma had been taken into treatment, Daniel finally faced the doctor.

“Did you pay her bill?” Daniel asked.

“Yes,” Dr. Wells said.

“Why?”

Dr. Wells took out an old photograph of a young woman holding a newborn baby.

“Because I believe Emma is the child I have been searching for for six years.”
