Chapter 6: Lily Morgan
The woman in the photograph was Laura Morgan, Dr. Wells’ sister.
She had been the only daughter of a powerful family that owned a large medical charity fund. Six years ago, she gave birth to a baby girl named Lily Morgan.
One week later, Laura disappeared with her newborn.
“There was an accident,” Dr. Wells said. “Laura died. The baby was never found.”
Daniel stood up.
“No. Emma is my daughter.”
“I know,” Dr. Wells said calmly.
“No, you don’t,” Daniel snapped. “I held her when she cried. I worked until my hands bled for her medicine. I taught her to read. I sat beside her bed every time she was sick. I don’t care what name she had before. She is my daughter.”
Dr. Wells did not argue.
“That is why I trust you,” he said. “I am not here to take her away. I am here to save her.”
Then he explained that Maria had been a volunteer nurse near the accident site. She may have found the baby and hidden her to protect her.
Daniel finally opened Maria’s envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Maria confessed that Laura had begged her not to let Victoria find the child. Maria had tried to report the truth, but records were changed, and someone threatened her into silence.
Daniel’s hands shook as he read the final line:
Emma will always know the way home, because her home is you.

This time, Daniel did not lower his head.
