Chapter 2: The Doctor in the White Coat

Daniel stared at the torn paper, unable to breathe.

“Wait,” he said, holding the pieces up. “This says her bill is paid.”

The cashier frowned and took the paper from him. She scanned the code into the system. The screen flashed. A new file opened.

Her face changed instantly.

Daniel leaned closer.

Beside the payment record was a photo of a man in a white coat.

Before Daniel could ask anything, a deep voice came from behind him.

“Do not discharge that child.”

Daniel turned.

The same doctor from the screen was standing only a few steps away.

The wealthy woman in the cream coat suddenly went pale.

“Dr. Wells…” she whispered.

Dr. Adrian Wells ignored her. His eyes were fixed on Emma.

“Take the child to treatment room three,” he ordered. “Call pediatric cardiology. Now.”

Nurses rushed forward with a stretcher. Daniel carefully placed Emma down, but she grabbed his sleeve.

“Daddy… don’t leave me.”

Daniel bent close to her forehead.

“I’m right here, princess. I promise.”

The emergency doors closed, leaving Daniel alone in the hallway with the torn bill still in his hands.

Dr. Wells stood beside him.

“Mr. Porter,” he said quietly, “there is something you need to know.”

Daniel looked at him with red eyes.

“If it is not about saving Emma, it can wait.”

Dr. Wells paused.

“It is about Emma. And about who she really is.”
