Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The next morning, Daniel left the hospital for two hours to beg for an advance from his boss.
His boss gave him a little money from his own wallet, but it was not enough. Daniel then pawned his father’s old watch and called everyone he knew.
Some people did not answer.
Some apologized.
One person told him, “Maybe you should accept fate.”
Daniel ended the call.
He could accept hunger. He could accept humiliation. He could even accept sleeping on a hospital chair.
But he would never accept losing Emma because he was poor.
When he returned to the hospital, he saw the wealthy woman again.
Her name was Victoria Whitmore.
She walked through the lobby like she owned the building. Her stepdaughter, Celeste, followed beside her, looking bored and cruel.
Celeste noticed Daniel’s visitor badge.
“Emma Porter?” she said. “Isn’t that the sick girl whose father can’t pay?”
Victoria smiled coldly.
Daniel tried to walk away, but Victoria’s next words stopped him.
“Your daughter?” she asked. “Are you sure?”
Daniel turned slowly.
“What did you say?”
Victoria looked at him for a moment too long.
“Nothing,” she said. “Some people simply hold onto things that were never theirs.”
Then she stepped into the elevator.
Daniel stood frozen.
First Dr. Wells had stared at the bracelet.
Now Victoria acted as if she knew Emma.

Before Daniel could think further, his phone rang.
Emma’s condition had suddenly worsened.
