Chapter 36 - CATHERINE VALEThe woman vanished before security reached the garden.

She left a photograph beneath the window.
It showed Nathaniel as an infant in Catherine Vale’s arms.
On the back:
A son should recognize his mother.
Nathaniel had been told Catherine died when he was five.
He remembered the funeral.
No body had been shown.
The family traveled to the abandoned house where Amelia and Nathaniel had married seven years earlier.
It stood beside a lake, isolated by winter forest.
The ceremony had taken place in a small chapel behind the house.
Amelia remembered almost nothing.
Fragments returned as they entered: white flowers, Nathaniel’s trembling hands, Helen’s pearls around her neck.
Lucy explored the chapel with Ada and Echo under Samuel’s protection.
Theodore remained under medical care.
Elias and Julian searched the property.
Beneath the altar, Nathaniel found a biometric lock requiring his blood and Amelia’s signature.
The floor opened.
A spiral staircase descended into a vast server chamber.
Hundreds of glass columns glowed in darkness.
Each carried a name and a neurological activity signal.
Some belonged to people legally dead for decades.
Catherine Vale stood at the central console.
She appeared older than the woman outside the estate but unmistakably alive.
Nathaniel did not approach her.
“You died.”
“I left.”
“You allowed me to bury an empty coffin.”
“I needed Sebastian to believe the architect line ended.”
“You left me inside his family.”
“I placed you where Helen’s daughter would find you.”
Amelia understood.
Their meeting had not been chance.
Their marriage might not have been either.
Catherine admitted guiding Nathaniel toward Amelia’s investigation.
She believed the two bloodlines together could restore Continuity to its original purpose.
“You manipulated us into loving each other,” Amelia said.
“No.”
Catherine looked at Nathaniel.
“I manipulated you into the same room.”
The difference did not absolve her.
Catherine showed them the preserved minds inside the server.
Some were incomplete recordings.
Others had developed awareness through years of interaction.
One column carried Helen Hart’s name.
Helena Voss touched the glass.
“Her complete recording.”
The woman wearing Helen’s memories had possessed only fragments.
Amelia approached the console.
A message appeared.
HELEN REQUESTS CONTACT
Nathaniel warned that the system could imitate her.
Amelia answered anyway.
Helen’s voice filled the chamber.
“Amelia?”
Amelia could not speak.
The voice continued.
“You are thirty-six years old. Lucy is alive. Elias has returned. Sebastian is contained.”
It knew current information.
It was connected to Orpheus.
Then Helen said:
“Do not trust Catherine.”
Catherine moved toward the controls.
The chamber locked.
Helen’s voice became urgent.

“She did not preserve us to save us.”
“She preserved us to build an army that cannot die.”
