Chapter 35 - THE HUSBAND’S FILENathaniel did not deny that a file existed.

He denied being the architect.
Helena displayed the sealed record.
PROJECT ORPHEUS
CONTINUITY ARCHITECT: NATHANIEL VALE
STATUS: ACTIVE
Amelia stared at him.
“You told me you discovered Orpheus with me.”
“I did.”
“Then why is your name on a file created before we met?”
Nathaniel removed his wedding ring.
Inside the metal was not only his search archive.
A second identity code had been engraved beneath it.
NATHANIEL SEBASTIAN VALE.
Theodore recognized the name.
Sebastian had a daughter before Theodore was born.
She disappeared from family records after marrying a man named Vale.
Nathaniel was Sebastian’s grandson.
He had entered Amelia’s life carrying Hart blood of his own.
“Did you know?” Amelia asked.
“Not when we met.”
“When did you learn?”
“The night you asked me to erase your memory.”
He had discovered that his mother, Catherine Vale, designed the Continuity division of Orpheus.
After her death, the system transferred authorship status to Nathaniel.
“Why keep it from me?”
“Because the architect authority could shut down Continuity, but only by taking control of it first.”
“You planned to control Orpheus?”
“I planned to destroy it.”
“That is what everyone says before they touch the system.”
Nathaniel accepted the judgment.
Lucy looked between them.
“Did he steal me?”
“No,” Amelia said.
Nathaniel’s voice broke.
“But I failed to find you.”
Ada examined the architect file.
“It is incomplete.”
A second authorization had been required.
The co-architect’s name was encrypted.
Helena used Helen’s neural key to open it.
The name appeared.
HELEN MARIE HART.
Amelia’s mother had helped design Continuity.
The revelation changed everything.
Helen had not merely discovered Orpheus.
She had built part of it with Catherine Vale.
Their original intention had been to preserve testimony from dying witnesses and protect identities.
Sebastian converted it into a succession weapon.
Nathaniel and Amelia were not only heirs.
They were descendants of the two women who created the system.
Lucy carried both lines.
That was why she was the perfect vessel.
A video file opened automatically.
Helen Hart appeared beside Catherine Vale.
“If our children are watching this,” Helen said, “then Sebastian survived us.”
Catherine continued.
“Do not destroy Continuity.”
Amelia felt anger rise.
Even now, the dead were instructing them.
Helen looked directly into the camera.
“Separate memory from ownership. Give every preserved mind the right to end.”
The video revealed a final server outside Hart Meridian.
It held the consciousness records of hundreds of people.
Some might still be aware.
Its location was concealed inside Nathaniel’s original marriage license.
He unfolded the document.
A sequence of coordinates ran beneath Amelia’s signature.
The site lay beneath the house where they had secretly married.
Lucy looked toward the dark window.
Someone stood outside.
A woman with Nathaniel’s face.

She raised one hand toward the glass.
Then every light in the estate went out.
