Chapter 28 - THE NAME SHE CHOSEOrpheus paused across every connected system.

Lucy’s chosen identity did not match any family registry.
That was precisely why it worked.
The program had been designed to categorize bloodlines, heirs and legal ownership.
It could not process a successor who refused inherited status.
Julian began dismantling Gabriel’s access while Helena restarted Nathaniel’s heart.
The first shock failed.
Amelia did not look at the screens.
She watched Nathaniel.
The second shock moved his body but produced no rhythm.
Lucy stood beside Amelia, silent.
The third shock restored a weak heartbeat.
Amelia released a breath she had not known she was holding.
Nathaniel opened his eyes several minutes later.
His first word was Lucy’s name.
Not Amelia’s.
Lucy turned away quickly, pretending to study the console.
Gabriel’s image returned.
“You delayed the protocol,” he said. “You did not stop it.”
Victor appeared beside him.
A dark bruise crossed his face from Elias’s attack.
Amelia realized they had been partners all along.
Their conflict had been staged to force every successor into one location.
Victor held a second composite device.
“The first was a prototype,” he said.
Gabriel raised the original federal judge’s seal.
“The final system requires legal authority.”
Nathaniel struggled upright.
“The judge who signed Amelia’s warrant.”
Gabriel nodded.
“He did not die six hours before the cemetery.”
The screen showed the judge alive inside Hart Meridian’s command facility.
“He died six years ago.”
Another continuity identity.
Another dead person preserved for legal signatures.
The judge authorized the Correction Protocol.
Systems resumed.
Lucy’s temporary authority began collapsing.
Helena searched the ledger.
“There is only one permanent shutdown.”
“What does it require?” Amelia asked.
“The death of all registered successors.”
Elias laughed bitterly.
“Sebastian’s final joke.”
Amelia looked at the four names now visible:
Amelia.
Elias.
Julian.
Lucy.
The program would survive as long as one of them lived.
Unless they could make the system believe all four were dead simultaneously.
Julian suggested falsifying biometric signals.
Helena shook her head.
“Orpheus verifies through heartbeat, blood chemistry and neural activity.”
Nathaniel looked toward the preserved treatment equipment.
“Then we do what Amelia did at seventeen.”
Amelia remembered the vial.
“Collect the samples.”
They could create temporary biological duplicates and destroy those instead.
But the system required the samples to be registered at Hart Meridian’s founding vault.
The vault lay beneath Theodore’s private estate.
The same estate where Helen had supposedly died.
Theodore called through the secure line.
“I can open it.”
Behind him, Cassandra stood near the cemetery coffin.
Evelyn was missing.
Samuel checked her location tracker.
It showed one place.
Hart Meridian’s founding vault.
Then the tracker stopped.

A final message arrived from Evelyn’s phone:
DO NOT LET THEODORE OPEN THE DOOR.
