Chapter 34 - THE MAN WHO REFUSED TO DIESebastian ordered everyone except Lucy to be killed.
The operatives entered the vault.
Echo fired first.
He defended Elias.
The two men moved like reflections trained by different wars.
Nathaniel pulled Amelia and Lucy behind the lower chambers while Julian disabled the lighting.
Ada guided Cassandra toward a maintenance shaft.
Helen’s vessel remained beside Sebastian.
“You are my father,” she said.
Sebastian looked at her with contempt.
“You are stored material.”
Her face changed.
The memories inside her included a daughter’s need for approval, but Sebastian saw only an experiment.
She stepped between him and Lucy.
“You will not take the child.”
Sebastian shot her.
Theodore caught her as she fell.
She touched his cheek.
“I remember loving you.”
Theodore held her.
“That memory was real to you.”
She died believing it was enough.
Amelia attacked Sebastian.
He was stronger than Thomas’s young body should have been. Neural conditioning anticipated her movements.
He disarmed her and pressed the weapon beneath her chin.
“You became everything Orpheus predicted.”
Lucy struck the composite device against the control panel.
The system opened Sebastian’s original suspension chamber.
Inside lay his ruined body.
Lucy activated the transfer command.
Sebastian froze.
His neural profile began being pulled back toward the original core.
He fought the process.
“What did you do?”
Lucy looked at him.
“I returned you.”
Thomas’s body collapsed.
Sebastian’s old chamber illuminated.
The dead face inside opened its eyes.
For the first time, Sebastian appeared afraid.
Julian sealed the chamber.
The operatives stopped receiving commands.
Federal teams led by Sofia Reyes breached the estate moments later.
Gabriel and Victor were no longer at Hart Meridian’s command facility.
They had used the chaos to disappear.
The Correction Protocol remained active in fragments, but Orpheus no longer had a central controller.
The surviving family gathered in the ruined library.
Theodore held Helen’s vessel beneath a white sheet.
Elias stood beside Echo.
Lucy sat with Amelia and Nathaniel.
Ada watched all of them.
Cassandra approached Julian.
“Is Margaret really your mother?”
“No.”
“Is Samuel really your father?”
“Yes.”
Samuel looked at him.
Julian added, “That is the only record I verified myself.”
Sofia entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was Gabriel’s bloodied knife.
It had been found beside Sebastian’s original chamber.
The blade contained fresh blood.
Not Sebastian’s.
Not Theodore’s.
The DNA matched Victor.
A message had been carved into the handle:
ONE ARCHITECT REMAINS.
Amelia looked at Helena.
“Who?”
Helena opened the final page of the Orpheus ledger.
