Private security systems locked their owners out.
Encrypted accounts across twelve countries transferred control to the Orpheus network.
Gabriel appeared on every screen inside the bunker.
His shoulder had been bandaged.
“The Hart family built an empire by hiding control behind inheritance,” he said. “Today, inheritance ends.”
Amelia held Lucy close despite the child’s initial resistance.
“What is he activating?” she asked.
Helena looked terrified.
“The Correction Protocol.”
Julian accessed the ledger.
The protocol had been designed to eliminate anyone capable of exposing Orpheus. It did not rely solely on assassinations.
It destroyed reputations, altered medical histories, generated criminal evidence and transferred legal identities.
“By morning,” Julian said, “we could all become fugitives, patients or dead people.”
Elias checked his federal profile.
His badge had already been revoked.
A warrant listed him as Gabriel Rowe’s accomplice.
Nathaniel’s records changed next.
His marriage to Amelia disappeared.
His military service became fraudulent.
Amelia’s identity remained untouched.
Gabriel needed Successor A recognized as legitimate long enough to complete the transfer.
Lucy held the composite device.
“Can this stop him?”
Julian examined it.
“It can issue one command before Gabriel blocks it.”
“What command?” Amelia asked.
“Anything requiring the four-successor signature.”
Helena opened the original ledger.
“There is a command Sebastian never completed.”
A page bore one phrase:
THE WIDOW CLAUSE
If the primary successor’s spouse died through Orpheus activity, command authority passed temporarily to the spouse’s verified dependent.
Nathaniel looked at Lucy.
“She could take control.”
“Only if I die,” Amelia said.
Helena shook her head.
“Not Amelia.”
Everyone looked at Nathaniel.
The system recognized him as her spouse even though public records had been erased.
If Nathaniel were clinically dead, Lucy would inherit emergency control.
Nathaniel understood immediately.
“No.”
Amelia faced him.
“You were willing to let Cassandra do it.”
“That was before we knew the system could stabilize elsewhere.”
Lucy stared at Nathaniel.
“You are afraid.”
“Yes.”
She seemed surprised by the honesty.
Nathaniel knelt before her.
“I am afraid I will not wake up. I am more afraid that you will believe my death is your fault.”
Gabriel’s countdown appeared.
Nine minutes until full Correction Protocol deployment.
Nathaniel lay on the bunker’s medical table.
Helena prepared the drugs.
Amelia caught his hand.
“I do not forgive you yet.”
“I know.”
“You are not allowed to die before I decide.”
He smiled faintly.
“That sounds like my wife.”
Helena injected him.
His heart stopped.
The composite device recognized Lucy.
DEPENDENT AUTHORITY ACTIVE
Lucy entered the command Julian gave her.
The system paused.
Then asked for the dependent’s chosen family name.
Lucy looked at Amelia.
Victor had called her Lucy Rowe.
Helena called her Lucy Hart.
Nathaniel’s hidden records named her Lucy Vale.
She typed none of them.
LUCY AMELIA NATHANIEL
The system rejected the entry.
Gabriel’s countdown reached three minutes.
Lucy looked at Nathaniel’s motionless body.
Then she entered:

LUCY FREE
The device accepted.
