Chapter 9 - the blood test)

Daniel reached room 814 with Rachel and two security officers.

Richard was gone.

Claire stood behind the locked door holding the hard drive.

"You need to see this."

They gathered around the laptop.

Daniel read the DNA result.

Then read it again.

"Fake."

Rachel remained cautious.

"Possibly."

Claire shook her head.

"The metadata says the analysis was performed twelve years ago."

Daniel looked at Margaret's name.

No maternal sample.

Subject A Daniel Mercer.

Subject B Charles Whitmore.

99.7 percent biological relationship.

"What relationship?" Daniel asked.

Rachel scrolled.

"It doesn't specify."

"Could be grandson."

"Yes."

"Or nephew?"

"Depending on family structure."

Claire whispered.

"Charles had only one acknowledged son."

"Richard."

"Yes."

Daniel looked at her.

Claire understood.

"If Charles was your grandfather through Richard..."

"No."

Daniel stood.

"No."

Rachel raised a hand.

"Nobody is concluding that."

Claire quickly said, "My father isn't your father."

Daniel stared.

"You don't know that."

"He would know."

"Maybe he does."

Claire shook her head.

"He never treated you like a son."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That may not prove much."

Margaret arrived twenty minutes later.

Daniel did not want her told before they understood more.

Rachel disagreed.

"It concerns her directly."

So Daniel showed her.

Margaret read the report.

Her reaction was not what anyone expected.

She did not look shocked.

She looked terrified.

Daniel saw it.

"You know something."

Margaret shook her head.

"Mom."

"I don't."

"You recognized this."

"No."

"You did."

Margaret sat.

Daniel waited.

Finally she whispered.

"Thomas once asked me a strange question."

"When?"

"Before the fire."

"What question?"

"He asked whether I knew who my father really was."

Daniel frowned.

"Your father was Martin Vale."

"That's what I believed."

Claire looked at the ledger.

Martin Vale's name had appeared among Blackthorn participants.

Margaret continued.

"My mother worked for Charles Whitmore before she married Martin."

Daniel began to understand.

"You're related to Charles."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Maybe."

Rachel spoke carefully.

"If Charles Whitmore was your biological father, Daniel could share significant DNA with him as a grandson."

Claire exhaled.

"So Richard isn't Daniel's father."

"Not necessarily."

Daniel looked at Margaret.

"Why didn't you ever investigate?"

"Because my mother refused to discuss it."

"What happened to her?"

"She died when I was nineteen."

"And Martin?"

"A year earlier."

"Both before Thomas disappeared."

Margaret nodded.

Daniel felt the Blackthorn story expanding backward.

It had not begun with Thomas.

It had begun before Margaret.

Rachel examined the folder.

"If Charles Whitmore was Margaret's biological father, Margaret may have had inheritance rights."

Claire looked up.

"My grandfather's estate was enormous."

"Who inherited?"

"My father."

Margaret whispered.

"Richard."

Rachel nodded.

"If Margaret was legally or biologically entitled to part of Charles's estate, Richard had a motive to keep her hidden."

Daniel stared.

"And me."

"Possibly."

Claire scrolled through the files.

"There's another folder called succession."

They opened it.

A scanned will appeared.

Charles Whitmore.

Dated twenty-two years earlier.

Clause 11 named an individual no one expected.

Margaret Anne Vale.

Beneficiary of forty-one percent of controlling shares upon verified biological relationship.

Margaret stared.

"I never knew."

Daniel read further.

Another clause.

Upon Margaret's death, her portion transferred to biological descendants.

Daniel.

Rachel sat back.

"That's why Richard tracked you."

Claire whispered.

"And why he wanted Daniel in the family."

Daniel turned.

"Explain."

Rachel pointed at the corporate structure.

"If Daniel married Claire and certain trusts were combined, Richard could potentially consolidate control through marital agreements."

Daniel remembered the wedding documents.

The contract Richard planned for him to sign.

"Acquisition pending."

Claire covered her mouth.

"My marriage was a corporate strategy."

Daniel looked at her.

"For your father."

Claire shook her head.

"For me too."

Everyone went silent.

Claire's voice broke.

"I knew there was a trust."

Daniel stared.

"How much did you know?"

"Not this."

"How much?"

She swallowed.

"My father told me marrying you would guarantee control of Whitmore Capital after he retired."

Daniel felt numb.

"You knew my company wasn't the only reason."

"I knew you had shares connected to old family holdings."

"You knew I was an asset."

"I loved you."

"Stop saying that."

Claire cried.

Margaret looked at her.

"Claire."

Claire turned.

Margaret's voice was surprisingly gentle.

"Love doesn't erase what you did."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"It also doesn't make confession meaningless."

Claire looked at her.

Margaret continued.

"If you want to change, stop deciding which truths other people are allowed to know."

Claire took a breath.

Then she opened another file.

"I have one more."

Video.

Dated eleven months earlier.

Richard sat in his office.

Another man faced away from the camera.

The audio was clear.

Richard said.

"Daniel doesn't know about the bloodline."

The unknown man replied.

"Keep it that way until the marriage is completed."

"And Margaret?"

"If she interferes, remove her."

Daniel became completely still.

Richard asked.

"Permanently?"

The man turned slightly.

Only part of his face appeared.

Gray hair.

A scar near one ear.

The unknown man said.

"If necessary."

Margaret gasped.

Daniel looked at her.

"You know him?"

She stared at the frozen frame.

"That's impossible."

"Who is he?"

May you like

Margaret whispered.

"Thomas."
