Chapter 2 - the bride had planned the humiliation)

Claire caught up with Margaret near the service entrance.

"Where are you going?"

"To find Daniel."

Claire blocked her path.

"You promised to help."

Margaret stared at her.

"I promised because you lied to me."

Claire's expression hardened.

"I asked for one small favor."

"You told the staff I didn't want anyone to know I'm Daniel's mother."

Claire glanced around.

"Keep your voice down."

"Why?"

"Because guests are arriving."

Margaret studied her.

"How much did your father tell you?"

Claire's eyes changed.

It lasted less than a second.

But Margaret saw it.

"About what?"

"Thomas Hale."

Claire said nothing.

Margaret stepped closer.

"You know that name."

Claire smiled slightly.

"Maybe you should ask Daniel what he knows."

"He doesn't know anything."

"Exactly."

Margaret's stomach tightened.

"You stay away from my son."

Claire's polite bridal expression disappeared completely.

"Your son is marrying me in three hours."

"Not if I tell him what your father did."

Claire tilted her head.

"And what exactly are you going to tell him?"

Margaret felt suddenly uncertain.

Claire noticed.

"That my father murdered Daniel's father?"

Margaret went still.

Claire smiled.

"You've believed that for thirty-one years, haven't you?"

"You don't know what I believe."

"I know more than you think."

Margaret tried to move around her.

Claire blocked her again.

"You tell Daniel anything before the ceremony, and my father destroys Daniel's company."

"Daniel would rather lose his company than marry into your family."

"Would he?"

Claire stepped closer.

"The Cascade Coast project carries four hundred million dollars in debt. Thousands of investors. Hundreds of employees. If my father withdraws his land agreements this afternoon, Daniel's lenders can trigger default provisions tomorrow morning."

Margaret stared at her.

Claire continued quietly.

"Your son spent ten years building something. You really want to burn it down because you're still frightened of something that happened before he was born?"

Margaret hated that Claire knew enough to make the threat credible.

"Why are you doing this?"

Claire's face briefly showed something more complicated than arrogance.

"Because Daniel loves me."

"People who love someone don't trap them."

Claire's eyes hardened again.

"People like you always think love means sacrifice."

She looked at Margaret's uniform.

"My father taught me something more useful."

"What?"

"Love is leverage."

Margaret felt pity for her then.

For one brief moment.

It vanished when Claire held out a tray.

"If you really love Daniel, you'll keep quiet until after the wedding."

Margaret looked at the champagne glasses.

"And afterward?"

"Afterward, we'll talk privately."

Margaret knew she should refuse.

She also knew Daniel's company employed hundreds of people.

She knew he had personally guaranteed loans.

And she knew Richard Whitmore was ruthless enough to destroy everything merely to prove that he could.

So Margaret made the decision she would regret within hours.

She took the tray.

"Until after the ceremony."

Claire smiled.

"Good."

But Claire had never intended to wait.

At eleven forty, twenty minutes before the ceremony, she told Margaret that several guests had moved toward the pool terrace for champagne.

She told her to serve them.

Margaret understood the insult.

She also understood that arguing publicly could expose Daniel before she had decided what to tell him.

So she carried the tray outside.

That was when Claire followed her.

Later, witnesses would disagree about the first shove.

Some said Claire intentionally struck Margaret.

Others claimed she merely bumped into her.

But everyone agreed on what happened next.

Champagne spilled.

A few drops landed on Claire's white shoes.

Claire stopped.

Margaret turned.

"I'm sorry."

Claire looked down.

The stain was barely visible.

She looked at Margaret.

"Clean it up."

Margaret thought she had misheard.

"What?"

Claire pointed toward the shoes.

"Clean them."

Guests began watching.

Margaret's face warmed.

"Claire, enough."

Claire stepped closer.

"Kneel."

Margaret looked past her.

Richard stood beneath an awning thirty feet away.

He did not intervene.

Instead, he watched.

Margaret suddenly understood.

This was not simply Claire being cruel.

It was a demonstration.

A reminder.

They wanted Margaret small.

Quiet.

Humiliated.

The same way Richard had wanted her thirty-one years earlier.

"That's what you're paid to do, isn't it?" Claire said.

Margaret's throat tightened.

She could have revealed everything there.

But then she saw Daniel speaking to guests across the terrace.

He was smiling.

Happy.

For a few more minutes, he still believed his wedding day was beautiful.

Margaret made another terrible decision.

She placed the tray down.

Picked up the cloth.

And knelt.

Claire's satisfaction was immediate.

Margaret wiped the shoe once.

Then twice.

She raised her head.

"Have you had enough?"

Claire's smile disappeared.

"What did you say?"

"I said, have you had enough?"

Margaret began standing.

Claire placed both hands against her shoulders.

The shove came fast.

Margaret stepped backward.

Her heel missed the edge of the stone.

For one suspended moment she saw sky.

Then water swallowed her.

The crowd screamed.

Daniel turned.

And in less than sixty seconds, the future everyone had planned shattered.

He confronted Claire.

Learned what she had done.

Pulled his mother from the pool.

Slapped Claire.

Threw away his ring.

Declared the wedding over.

Then Richard spoke Thomas Hale's name.

And the past stepped into the sunlight.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

"Who's Thomas?"

She was soaked, shaking, and exhausted.

She looked at Richard.

Then at her son.

"The man I told you died before you were born."

Daniel waited.

Margaret swallowed.

"Your father."

Daniel's face tightened.

"I know that."

"No."

Margaret's eyes filled.

"You know the story I gave you."

She looked again at Richard.

"The truth is different."

Richard spoke calmly.

"Be careful, Margaret."

Daniel turned toward him.

"Stop threatening my mother."

Richard smiled.

"Ask her where Thomas's body is."

Daniel looked back at Margaret.

She could not answer.

May you like

Because after thirty-one years, Margaret finally had to admit the question that had haunted every night of her life.

She had never seen Thomas Hale's body.
