Chapter 14 - the names in the final room)

Emergency lights flickered on.

Rachel pulled Margaret behind a stone column.

Daniel grabbed Claire and dragged her down.

Thomas disappeared toward the staircase.

Richard shouted.

"Security!"

Another gunshot.

Glass shattered.

A man wearing black tactical clothing moved across the upper balcony.

Not Richard's security.

Not police.

Thomas fired back from behind a doorway.

Daniel stared.

His father carried a gun as naturally as if he had spent decades expecting this moment.

"Back exit!" Thomas shouted.

Richard moved toward him.

"The archive!"

"Forget it."

"I spent thirty years protecting it."

"You spent thirty years protecting yourself."

The attacker descended.

Thomas fired once.

The man retreated.

Rachel called emergency services.

Daniel looked toward the locked archive door.

Everything that had destroyed his family was behind it.

He was not leaving.

Claire saw his expression.

"No."

Daniel pulled free.

"I'm opening it."

"Daniel."

He ran.

Richard shouted.

"Stop him!"

That confirmed everything.

Daniel reached the door.

Thomas had left the key inside.

He turned it.

Richard rushed toward him.

Margaret stepped directly into Richard's path.

He stopped.

She looked small beside him.

Still bruised from the pool.

Still wearing borrowed clothes from the hotel.

But she did not move.

Richard stared down.

"Margaret."

She looked into his eyes.

"Thirty-one years ago, I ran."

Richard's jaw tightened.

She continued.

"Today I knelt."

Daniel opened the door.

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Never again."

Police sirens sounded outside.

Richard looked toward the windows.

His chance disappeared.

Daniel entered the archive.

Rows of cabinets filled an underground room.

Servers hummed.

Printed records sat in fireproof cases.

At the center stood a table containing red folders.

Rachel joined him.

Claire followed.

Thomas arrived moments later.

"We have minutes."

"Before what?"

Thomas looked toward the servers.

"Remote purge."

Daniel laughed.

"Everyone loves deleting evidence."

Thomas began pulling drives.

Claire opened one red folder.

Her father's name.

Another.

Charles Whitmore.

Another.

Thomas Hale.

Daniel grabbed his father's folder.

Inside were reports documenting seventeen years of undercover cooperation with multiple federal agencies.

He looked at Thomas.

"You were working with investigators."

"Some."

"Some?"

"Others belonged to the Circle."

Daniel understood why Thomas trusted no institution completely.

Rachel opened Richard's folder.

Financial crimes.

Blackmail.

Obstruction.

Suspected involvement in two disappearances.

One listed name.

Thomas Hale.

Second.

Elias Mercer.

Rachel looked at Richard through the open doorway.

"He tried to kill both of you."

Thomas nodded.

"But failed."

Daniel asked.

"What about the body in the fire?"

Thomas's face changed.

"Martin Vale."

Margaret went pale.

"My father?"

Thomas nodded.

"Richard didn't know Martin was inside."

Margaret stared.

"Why was he there?"

"He came to confess something to you."

"What?"

Thomas looked toward the red folders.

"That Charles Whitmore was your biological father."

Margaret closed her eyes.

The DNA report was true.

Charles had fathered Margaret during an affair with her mother.

Martin raised her as his daughter.

When Martin discovered the Circle's crimes, he tried to help Thomas expose them.

He died in the Blackthorn fire.

Richard assumed the body was Thomas.

Thomas used the mistake to disappear.

Daniel asked.

"And seventeen years ago?"

"I returned because I thought I had enough evidence."

"Richard caught you."

"Yes."

"You got into his car."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Thomas looked at Richard.

"We made a deal."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What deal?"

"I would become director of Thomas House."

Margaret stared.

"You joined them."

"I took control of the archive."

"Why?"

"Because destroying it would only scatter the people behind it."

Thomas looked at Daniel.

"I wanted names."

"Did you get them?"

Thomas looked toward the red folders.

"Most."

Claire opened a cabinet.

Rows of files.

Judges.

Governors.

Executives.

Foreign officials.

Daniel felt physically sick.

"And the Cascade Coast project?"

Thomas's expression changed.

"The original Thomas House archive isn't here."

"Where?"

"Under Blackthorn."

"The tunnels."

Thomas nodded.

"The Circle wants Cascade Coast because construction gives them legal authority to excavate and move the archive without scrutiny."

Daniel finally understood.

His company had unknowingly become the perfect vehicle to relocate a century of secrets.

"And my marriage?"

"Richard wanted your inheritance rights and your company's access."

Claire whispered.

"So he gave Daniel to me."

Richard shouted from the doorway.

"I gave you security."

Claire turned.

"You gave me a transaction."

Police entered the house upstairs.

Commands echoed.

Richard looked toward the archive.

His empire was ending.

Daniel expected satisfaction.

Instead he felt tired.

Rachel secured copies of the documents.

Thomas handed Daniel one final red folder.

No name.

Only a symbol.

A circle surrounding the number seven.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a list titled Founding Families.

Six names were visible.

Whitmore.

Keene.

Vale.

Hale.

Mercer.

Bishop.

The seventh line was blacked out.

Daniel frowned.

"Who's number seven?"

Thomas looked afraid.

It was the first time Daniel had seen fear on his father's face.

"That's the name I spent seventeen years trying to discover."

Rachel asked.

"You never did?"

Thomas shook his head.

Richard laughed from the doorway.

Everyone looked at him.

Police officers were restraining him.

He smiled.

"You still don't understand."

Daniel approached.

"Understand what?"

Richard looked directly at Margaret.

"The seventh family isn't hidden because Thomas couldn't find them."

A pause.

"They're hidden because they own the archive."

Thomas went still.

Richard smiled wider.

May you like

"And they know you're here."

At that exact moment, every server in the room shut down.
