Chapter 11 - the man across the street)

Security footage from the financial office required a warrant.

Rachel found another way.

A coffee shop next door had exterior cameras.

Its owner agreed to share recordings.

At 11:48 a.m., a dark sedan arrived.

A man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Dark jacket.

He entered the private office.

At 12:06, he emerged.

He stopped on the sidewalk.

Turned toward the road.

For several seconds, he looked directly toward Villa Marcelline.

The camera captured his face.

Margaret sat in front of Rachel's laptop.

Her hands trembled.

"Thomas."

Daniel stared.

There was no ambiguity this time.

Thomas Hale was alive.

He had been within walking distance of his son's wedding.

And he had not come.

Daniel felt something inside him close.

"Where did the car go?"

Rachel's investigator tracked traffic cameras.

North.

Then east.

The vehicle disappeared near an industrial district.

Police were notified.

Daniel refused to remain at the hotel.

Margaret insisted on going with him.

Rachel reluctantly agreed only after law enforcement located the abandoned sedan.

Inside, officers found nothing except a paper parking receipt.

The receipt was from a marina.

Pier 19.

They arrived after dark.

Boats rocked beneath yellow lights.

Police searched the docks.

One slip was empty.

Harbor records showed a vessel departed at 12:31 p.m.

Registered owner.

Hale Marine Research LLC.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"He's not hiding very hard."

Rachel shook her head.

"The company was incorporated two months ago using a proxy service."

Margaret stared toward the water.

"Where was the boat going?"

Harbor logs listed no destination.

Then an officer approached.

"We found something."

A locker near the dock had been rented under Daniel's name.

Daniel looked confused.

"I've never been here."

The officer opened it.

Inside was a small black case.

No explosives.

No weapon.

A stack of photographs.

Daniel picked up the first.

Him at age six entering elementary school.

The next.

Age twelve playing basketball.

Age eighteen graduating high school.

Age twenty-two outside college.

Age twenty-five beside Margaret.

Age twenty-eight presenting at an energy conference.

Photographs spanning his entire life.

Thomas had been watching.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel kept flipping.

Then Claire appeared in the photographs.

The night they met.

Their first public event.

A vacation.

Their engagement.

Thomas had watched everything.

Beneath the photographs was a handwritten letter.

Daniel recognized the handwriting from the old Blackthorn notes.

His father's.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then Richard has failed to keep you inside his family.

That means something happened at the wedding.

I hoped I could stop it before you learned the truth.

I was wrong.

Daniel paused.

His throat tightened.

Margaret stood beside him.

He continued.

You have every reason to hate me.

Do not forgive me because Margaret loved me.

Do not forgive me because I am your father.

I made choices that protected you and destroyed other people.

Some of those choices cannot be defended.

But one thing matters now.

Richard Whitmore is not the greatest danger.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

Then continued.

The people behind Blackthorn survived because they learned how to turn families into weapons.

They used Charles.

Then Richard.

Then me.

Now they want you.

Do not trust anyone who tells you this is about inheritance.

The money is camouflage.

The real asset is Cascade Coast.

Daniel stopped.

His company.

He read faster.

You believe Cascade Coast is an energy project.

It is not.

Before construction begins, inspect geological survey file CC-17.

Do not access it through your company servers.

There is a second layer.

Thomas ended with one final line.

Margaret knows the password, even if she does not know that she knows it.

Daniel looked at his mother.

She shook her head.

"I have no idea."

Rachel asked.

"What is CC-17?"

Daniel pulled out his phone but stopped himself.

The letter warned him not to use company systems.

"It's a geological survey."

"Of what?"

"Underground formations beneath the coastal land."

Margaret looked confused.

"Why would that matter?"

Daniel stared toward the dark ocean.

His company planned to install underground transmission infrastructure across several miles.

During preliminary surveys, teams had mapped caves, old utility tunnels, and mineral layers.

He remembered Parcel 17C.

Blackthorn.

Then he remembered another anomaly.

A deep man-made structure recorded beneath the cliffs.

Engineers assumed it was an abandoned military installation.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Cascade Coast isn't about land."

May you like

"What is it about?"

"What's under it."
